Dom, I get that you don’t want to potentially influence or bias your senses or your nose if you’re planning to go down a product/scent development road, however, I would think there could be some value in knowing the landscape. For example, if I wanted to make a bay rum, I would want to know as much as I could learn about bay rum, especially what it’s basically made of and supposed to smell like. What bay rum and variations on bay rum are out there and what do I like or dislike about them. What bay rums are widely regarded as great and which are not. Are there any deal breakers for me and so forth. You’d also avoid (if you wanted to) independently creating a bay rum that is the same or similar to an existing one. Once I’ve done that research, which believe me, I would enjoy, I’d then decide what I wanted to make in the bay rum line- an inoffensive every day bay rum, a spice bomb, a pirates dream, my idea of the ultimate bay rum?  All of them? There’s no reason why a label can only have one bay rum. Look at PAA, I think they have the most bay rum variants (of concern) of anyone in the biz.

I think more knowledge is better. It also allows you to collect an impressive number of bay rums.

After reading andrewjs18 and Marko on the MacDuff Prairie Rum Runner and also the reviews of the Thor's hammer, I got some splash of each.  I love the bay rum scents of each -- the Prairie Rum Runner essentially being citrus over bay and brighter and the Thor's hammer being a straightforward bay. Both just make me want to sit down and sniff the bottles.  The Prairie Rum I've now used once and, sadly, it lasted about 5 minutes on me (if that) and I had the same problem with the Thor's.  I'll try the MacDuff again and if I have the same experience, I'll be putting them up for BST together. It would be too bad for me to have to do so but if the scents really don't stay at all, I'll stick to others which do work better for me, though I'm sure someone here may want to try these two.

I tried Thor's Hammer Bay Rum Aftershave, too. I liked the scent, especially after the first minute or so. It really took off when it warmed up on my skin. Good spicy bay rum, and the smell of orange peel was pretty clear at first. Sort of reminded me of the brown bag lunches I carried to school when I was a kid – there was always an orange in the bottom. But the fragrance overall was short lived. The orange disappeared within seconds, and after ten minutes the whole show was over. I could hardly smell it on the palms of my hands.

Agreed.  If anyone else wants to try Thor's, I am giving away my sample of it along with the MacDuffs Prairie Rum Runner I'm selling on BST (if I'm allowed to say that in this thread.....)

The answer to the short lived problem is frequent reapplication 

So it finally makes sense. The fleeting aroma of so many bay rums requiring frequent reapplication must be the reason Kramperts Acadian Spice Bay Rum sold a hip flask. So you could always have some handy for reapplication throughout the day. Inspired.

honestly, the biggest problem for most bay rums on the market is that the scent fades away rather quickly. thor's hammer will usually last on me for maybe 30min-1hr, but that's about what I get out of *most* bay rums. the exception to this rule is probably PAA's splashes, at least the 3 I have on hand currently - clasico, atomic pumpkin and space nog, with atomic pumpkin being my favorite of the 3.

I finally figured out why this is called Thor's Hammer. The name has nothing to do with the strength of the scent. I painted the front steps today. Of course, I got paint all over myself. Good, sturdy, outdoor deck paint, too. Water wasn't moving it, so I doused my hands with Thor's Hammer and the paint just melted away. From now on, whenever I get to cleaning up after painting, it's gonna be Hammer Time.

PS: I have a pocket knife that I use to open packages. What with all the tape and glue and plasticky bits I have to cut through, it gets gunked up pretty fast. So I put a few drops of Thor's Hammer on the blade and went to work with a soft cloth. The bay rum ate right through the gummy mess in no time. It may be just a ho hum aftershave, but it's a pretty decent solvent. Smells good too.
