No. 89 (Floris)
citrus fougère
If you like unwrapping packages on Christmas morning, you’ll love diving into
No. 89 when it comes in the mail. This is the most elaborately presented soap I’ve ever bought. Between me and the puck, I counted two printed boxes, three layers of wrapping paper, two layers of bubble wrap, a rosewood bowl, and enough tissue to get me through another TP famine. I’m happy to say that finally unveiling the soap wasn’t in the least anticlimactic. I popped open the elegant wooden lid, took a whiff of that rich soapy cologne, and fell in love. Nutmeg, orange blossom, ylang ylang, and some genuinely good smelling sandalwood filled the room and seemed to turn our knotty pine paneling into mahogany. Old fashioned? Sure, but it still smells really elegant, and unlike so many other British shave soaps,
No. 89 loads without any effort and makes a very nice lather. Thanks,
Nero for pointing me in this direction.
(NB: this is the most recent version of No. 89, whose list of ingredients begins with potassium palmate. Some shavers have been disappointed with earlier formulations of this soap.)
