Original v. (Martin de Candre) rosemary, lavender
For a long time I thought the word rosemary had something to do with roses. I buried my snout in a big green bunch of the prickly herb hoping to find something sweet, but of course, it just wasn’t there. Instead I got a lovely pine-sap aroma with mint and camphor mixed in. It was invigorating and screamed “clean,” but what was up with the rosy name? Turns out English borrowed the word rosemary from Latin rosmarinus, literally “dew of the sea.” The plant thrives in a rocky environment completely exposed to salty winds blowing in from the ocean. It’s one of the few herbs my wife can keep going all year round in our sandy, salty soil. And when I whip up a good thick lather of Martin de Candre's Original, it's green, piney scent fills the house, and for a few minutes our artificial Christmas tree almost comes to life.
