Finally a day leaning on hot. Made it to 80 degrees which I know is not hot. Pleasant actually. But it snowed about a week ago so things are relative. I broke out a soap I haven't used in about a year. Chiseled Face Summer Storm. I love this soap. Of all the Petrichor type soaps I've tried, this one does it the best. Today a ground a little menthol into the mix. It wrecked the scent but it sure added to the idea of summer storm cooling. Awesome shave today.

Crema da Barba v. (Santa Maria Novella) eucalyptus, menthol, Tobacco Toscano cologne

Last winter I tried SMN and came away disappointed. The first, and really the only thing a soap must offer is protection from the ravages of a very sharp blade. It doesn’t matter how shiny the lather is or how nice it smells if it doesn’t save your skin. So I was down on SMN because back in January I was left taut and raw.

But six months later I try the same soap again, and now I get splendid results. What did I do different? This time I used double the soap. The results were a slick scrumptious lather as glossy as soft ice cream on a hot beach. And the cushion was there, too, enough for three painless passes. Six hours later and there’s still no trace of a barb.

Why did I hold back in January? Well, this stuff is expensive. Really expensive. And as I loaded my brush,  the inner accountant in me was keeping a running tally of the cost of each swirl over the puck. That was my mistake. Best to regard this soap as pure luxury. You want it, you’re going to have to pay for it, and don’t think that it’s going to save you money in the long run. Better to just load it like you’re George Clooney lathering in your villa overlooking Lake Como, and for once forget about the cost.
