Wool Fat (Mitchell's) ★★★★ soapy floral

I've had some remarkable shaves with this soap over the years, but today's just seemed run of the mill. There was nothing wrong with the lather. It's never been difficult for me to make a heaping pot of suds from this puck. The scent, well, it's nothing to write home about, but it's not annoying either. It smells like soap, which is exactly what it is. Who can fault it for that? In the past, though, I've reveled in the smooth soft feel of the Fat's finish. I suspect other soap cookers have at last caught up with what Mitchells perfected some time ago. Now it's not unusual for even a mid-tier soap to leave you as plump as only Mitchell's soap used to.

You know I occasionally get a sub standard shave from soaps and creams I consider excellent. There is a reason but for the life of me I cannot put my finger on it. It could be the brush. I believe I have 20 now and sometimes a different brush can make a great soap no so great that day. As well as blades I use six different blades and that could also make a difference.

I have been using MWF for a long long time and it is a great soap. But I have had days when it was just oh hum. I will however, continue to use it.

I wanted a bit of citrus sunshine this wintery morning and have not had this one in rotation for a long while. Dr. Johns Hydra is a snootful of citrus. I like the scent but in my hard water it is only a middling performer (which isn't bad). I doesn't seem to care how much soap I load or water I add, lather looks great but protection and slickness just don't hang with my favorites. This is the old formula and I cannot speak to the current soap. Many people like it a lot. I suspect water is the issue for me.

Grooming Department Mallard Earl Grey...also used their pre and post shave...My face still feels smooth, soft and freshly shaved 12 hours later.

Moroccan Sands v. (Nanny's Silly Soap, Signature) ★★★★ rose, incense, oud, musk

It's been eight hours since I shaved and my face still feels like I just put the razor down. If I'm reading their Web site right, 30% of the formula is Shea butter. That makes for an extraordinarily rich finish. NSS Signature soap has turned out to be a very happy surprise. I say 'surprise' because with a name like 'Silly Soap', I really wasn't expecting much. But it delivered by the boatload and has given some of my best shaves ever. Unlike some vegan soaps, NSS Signature will soak up lots of water. It doesn't turn glossy or heavy, but it does give ample protection for a comfortable three-pass shave. The scent is a rose-oud that's within sniffing distance of Montale's Black Aoud fragrance.

I'm very sorry to see this sample all turned to suds, but I'll put Moroccan Sands at the top of my wish list. After I've churned through a few more tubs on my shelf, I'll fill the gap with a full four ounces of this slick and smooth soap.
