Pine Tar (Chiseled Face)

After staring at this sample for two years, I finally mustered the nerve to open it. One deep whiff confirms that yes, it does smell like a deodorant (phenol) used in a public facility, but if you can shake off that association for a few minutes, you may  enjoy the bold note of smoky pine sap. It lathers stiff and easy, and it led to an excellent shave. That doesn't mean, though, that I'll be moving it to the top of the rotation.

Lemon, Basil & Mandarin (Nanny's Silly Soap Traditional) green citrus

In 1991 Jo Malone came out with her remarkable Lime, Basil & Mandarin fragrance. It was clean, green and very popular with both women and men. Today's soap pays homage to that perfume with the slight change of lemon for the original's lime. The basil note stands out in the lather, but there's enough citrus around the sides to keep it from sliding into pesto area. The most curious note is the mandarin, which I don't pick up clearly in the puck or the lather, but after the last rinse, I can smell crushed mandarin leaves. Neat trick.
