I'm three shaves in with the R41 and my initial impressions are that it is a great looking And well made razor the rose gold is beautiful.  That being said I'm getting great BBS shaves no nicks, weepers, in three shaves (wouldn't reccomend using this razor hungover however) but, they haven't been smooth shaves.  However, the experience of this razor mirrors my fattip piccolo so maybe by nature aggressive razors aren't as smooth yet, they are efficient .  Two passes and BBS.

It took me about 3 weeks of consistent use to figure out how to get a comfortable shave from mine. No secrets or anything, just practice.

Every part of the technique used must be perfect. I always make yogurt-like lather every day anyway, but you really want a dense protective lather with it. Great technique pays huge dividends with the R41.

The R41 is an excellent razor but not one I would use first thing in the morning.  It is one of those razors that you need to pay attention too when using.  What do I mean?  The Gillette tech is a razor I could use with my eyes closed, the Razorock slant I can use in the dark if the lights went out.  The R41....a completely different animal.  Use only in a well lit room, wide awake and after a minimum of 2 cups of coffee.  Absolutely no forgivenesses .  An excellent shave can be had from this razor, but only after you take the time.  The angle for this one starts at 90 degrees with zero pressure.

I did pick one up when I started wetshaving and promptly sold it after several bloodbaths.  I repurchased it after a year and the difference was like night and day.  Experience and skill (as was mentioned earlier) makes the difference.

I have zero experience with a fattip so I'm no help there.

I love my R41 (2013) especially when paired with the ATT Atlas
Handle. As others have said, spot on technique and an excellent lather are required. Oh, and do have that first "cuppa Joe" before you shave. Interesting on how YMMV, for me short strokes and a slightly steeper shaving angle smoothes out the shave for me.

I love my R41 with a heavier bulldog handle - it's definitely more efficient though a bit less smooth than the FaTip and, as others have said, it rewards good technique with quite incredible results.

Oh and once you've got the 2013 R41 working well for you, get a Spitfire cap for it cos that takes it into another dimension Smile

I second the query on spitfire cap.  What is it?  I'm a week in with the R41 7 shaves total..... Today I used another razor and needless to say I was disappointed in the shave where two weeks ago I really loved the razor I used today (Merkur slant) I'm beginning to think the R41 has shaved itself intomthe demise of other razors in my den.

The link above is to the cap.  Aimsport developed 3 caps.  The Lancaster turns a 2011 into a 2013.  The Spitfire turns the 2013 into a 2011.  The Hurricane turns either into something in the middle.
