I like it. The only other brewing device I have is a Bialetti moka pot. I like both very much. I was debating between the kalita wave and v60, and went with the kalita because I read it's less fussy.

Do you just pour in the full quantity of water and let it drip through? 

I use the v60 with a pulse technique. I bloom with 30 gms of water then the water in “pulses” 60gms then 100gms Then another 100gms for a total of 350gms for 24gms if coffee. I guess it is a little fussy but then, I like fussing sometimes.

I like the look of that unit. It’s important to be able to take things apart and clean them so your coffee doesn’t wind up tasting like office coffee.

To gregcss , i think this was what was running through my head when i saw your picture. I guess I didn’t recognize the Kalita as I have only used a black glazed ceramic version. I have used those a few times but more of the V60 for pour overs. If you use the Kalita, what is an average dose weight for a cup of coffee?

To give you guys some reference, I’m Using a $20 single cup electric grinder. It needs replacing but I haven’t been able to make a decision on how much to upgrade on. I appreciate everyone’s input and I’m pretty open to investing in one. I don’t think I want to worry about espresso focused grinders as I am doing a lot of cold brew “coarse and fine”and immersion like French (almost never), Aeropress (always), and Bialetti Moka Pot (still haven’t used). I willing to consider something under $400 so a Baratza is a nice suggestion. I was hoping to find something versatile and it seems like the price is something that is all over the place. I don’t want another $20 grinder, that’s for sure.

Marko the video you referenced to I saw and have them subscribed. I thought those recent style videos are pretty interesting but almost posted one of the videos in here. I find them fun to listen to as I am still new to coffee. Only been drinking it for a few years.

I went a little cheaper than the Baratza Encore with this one and it's actually been great. If it blows up I'll upgrade to the Encore as I've head good things about it, especially it's ease of replacement parts and customer service. That said tis has been a great unit thus far. Looks to be @$100 everywhere. I got it from Amazon for $80

I'm not sure a grinder exists that can do both espresso grind and the coarser grinds for drip or French press / aerropress - It reminds me of when I was shopping for a new snare drum for my son who had gotten into percussion - I'd started him out on a cheap drum kit that I got for free from someone and he had shown aptitude and commitment so a new snare drum for Christmas was in order.  I told the guy in the drum shop that I was looking for a good, reasonably priced all purpose snare with the crack of steel and the warmth of wood.  He laughed and said such a beast does not exist. Apparently when you want a different quality you get a different drum.  Studio percussionists will b ring upwards of 30 different snare drums to a recording session.  I think guitarists are the same way...don't even look at that one!  Big Grin  My son only has 4 or 5 snare drums now.   But I digress, I find the Barratzza good for various degrees of medium to coarse grinds b ut not great for espresso.  It plugs up.  I think if you're doing a lot of espresso you want a dedicated grinder - its a hassle finding the right grind that will give you a decent tamp with the right degree of porosity - too coarse, you get underextraction as the water just blasts through, too fine and you'll get over extraction and. or plugging as the water can';t get through.  Its a trial and error process to get the right grind and the right tamp to give you a reasonable chance of getting the elusive god shot.I've never done it although I've come close.  Point is once you get the grind dialled ind for espresso you don't want to change it.  And you hope nobody else comes along and messes with it when you're not looking.  I got a Rocky Rancillio a few years back and thought it would be the answer to my quest for the all purpose grinder but it wasn't.  It does a good job at espresso although its a little harder to clean thoroughly than the Baratzza.  It also has a very large footprint on your counter.

Coffee is a great thing and there is always something to learn or to challenge if you want no matter how long you've been at it.  I like that you can run the full range from McDonalds coffee to instant coffee to home roasting and its all coffee.  I'm not ashamed to admit that I will on occasion drink instant coffee and I don't mind it.  You can't beat the convenience.  Theres a columbian brand of instant that I find at the latino market sometimes that I like Juan Valdez but Ill do Nescafe to and I like those sweet and creamy one shot pouches as well.  Don't get me wrong, instant's not even close to home roasted fresh brewed but there is a place for it in my world.  I blame the government for my coffee habit, the army specifically - in basic when you're in the field and you're cold and wet and tired and the sergeant pulls up in a truck with refreshments cold beverages or hot coffee, the choice was clear and the rest is history as they say.

I use 16g of beans to 255ml of water or about 1:16 ratio. Based on those grinder needs I dont think you need anything high end. The Baratza Encore is about $140 and the Virtuoso $250 are two to consider.

Bloom in ~30g of water for 30seconds then pour to the top and then add more when most of the water has filtered through. It's about 3 or so pours/pulses in all.
