I picked one up, an Ikon Tech, back when there was buzz about how aggressive they are years ago. Maybe shaved with it once or twice. With the exception of an occasional DE slant shave I was a dedicated straight razor shaver for near a decade.
Anyway ... so reading this thread I got my Ikon Tech out and dusted it off. Loaded a Wizmet in it and shaved. I've been shaving daily with various razors. Checking out how different razors/blades work for me doing a daily instead of every other day.
Glad I read this thread before I got the notion to shave with the Tech. It was a good shave, very bbs, but I approached it with a very light and careful hand. I'm not that schooled on the physics of razor construction, so I don't know why it is as it is ... but it definitely feels aggressive. I made it through with no cuts, nicks, or weepers however. It went back in the cabinet where it will stay until some future urge to try it again.
So wanting to compare the Tech with another fearsome DE I let 2 days pass and got out my Muhle 2011 R-41. Haven't shaved with it in years. Because I was primarily a straight razor shaver back then, my technique with safety razors was not expert. Sort of like shooting pool (billiards) you have to do it regularly to be proficient. All I remembered about shaving with the R-41 was that it wasn't something I wanted to do again. Been years put away.
Loaded a new Red Israeli Personna in the R-41 and did my first WTG. I didn't feel it was sharp enough, so I took a Gillette Silver Blue, with 2 shaves behind it and loaded it for the second pass, my ATG.
Smooth as silk. I've been a few years, maybe more as a DE and occasional SE shaver now. My technique has improved and the fearsome 2011 R-41 wasn't bad at all. Left me cut/nick/weeper free, and comfortably BBS.
