How is it possible to go through 20 soaps in 6 months? That is how I read this. The author talks about burning through a pound of soap. Huh How is that possible? 20 in 6 months? Or am I reading this wrong? The author even admits it will drive people crazy? I dont see how it possible. The 3 passes plus touchup thing is common. But I assume of course everyone does that. Sorry I should have led with the blog entry because thats my real question.

my bad.

I see what you mean. 20 soaps in 6.5 months is hard to believe. That's an average of 3 soaps per month roughly, which if shaving every day is 21 shaves per soap. I wonder if he is a head shaver too, as that would probably be the equivalent of 42 shaves. He does seem to use a lot of PAA shave soaps, which I also am a big fan of and know them well. They are fairly soft soaps that if loaded heavily can be used up relatively fast. I am half way finished with Tombstone but I don't know how many shaves I've used it for, but in my rotation it probably gets used about once a week and sometimes twice since I love the scent. Another thing it seems he does is uses the same soap every day. I can see a softer soap getting used up that fast if used daily and loaded heavily, but I still think it's overkill.

I think it was Joe from RazoRock/Italian Barber on here several months back that said he can go through one of his RR soaps in two weeks. Those are also softer soaps that if loaded heavily will go fast. Also, he admitted he loads the heck out of them.

In my case I have yet to finish a full size soap but I am getting really close to finishing Lavanille, Tombstone, and Leviathan. I have finished a few Stirling samples though, which are 1oz in size. I think the reason I haven't finished many soaps is because I tend to either grow tired of a scent or find new scents that I like better. I tend to sell off a lot of soaps that aren't getting used as much as they should too. However, I know for fact I will finish the three above as I am probably never going to grow tired of those scents.

I have about 20 soaps I've been wet shaving now almost a year and I haven't really made a dent in any of my soaps. I think if you have 20 soaps in rotation it should last at least 10 years. I like a heavy load. Creams are different. You can burn threw a cream fast. But I get tons of lather with an almond size dollop.

After every shave I do a brush squeeze and make a unicorn horn of lather on my forehead. So;

I can do a four pass shave and a unicorn horn, nightly.

Don't push me on this or I start a unicorn thread, and membership is based on pics and you are in.

I say load it like you love it

I own 300+ soaps and creams and I like to heavily overload my soaps.

I have ROCK HARD WATER.
With hard water you need to load more product.

All the times I have had lather problems, 9/10 times I underloaded, so I make sure to overload now.

If I used a soap and a cream up a month, I will still have enough soap and cream to last me 15+ years, if I stopped buying new stuff today.

So why underloaded, when overloading gives me a better lather

I call BS on this. There is no way dude went through 20 full tubs of soap already. That really would be wasteful. What, does he shave 5 times a day?

What you are describing is exactly the problem when someone thinks they are getting a great "deal" because a product cost $7 but for the year they need to spend $168 to have soap for a year vs something like MdC or C&S where they might spend $70 for the same year.

Sometimes people can't get beyond the initial cost regardless of the fact that in the long run they spend more money.

But yeah, I thought 20 far far too excessive. Where is it all going?????

grim, thanks for the link to that blog post. I have read the author’s words a few times, and honestly, I’m not quite sure what he is trying to say.

“But say hello to my 20th soap for 2016. I had nearly a pound of soap in here at one point and one them is no longer available which was the Eh+. I had C.a.D, ClubGuy, and Eh+ in this container and I burned right through it.”

My guess is that he has used three 4 oz. soaps, which equals “nearly a pound” (three quarters of a pound, really) — the soaps that he mentioned by name (CaD, ClubGuy, Eh+), but he has received 20 soaps this year so far.

Like I said, the blog entry is kind of open for interpretation because of the slightly unclear wording. But it’s made this thread interesting, nevertheless!

The first "artisan" soap I purchased was Italian Barber Amici. $2.99 for 4 oz. It is a regular in my rotation. I bought it in November 2015. Haven't made a dent in it yet. And I load it like I hate it every time. I have probably had 30+ shaves with it. So much for poor cost-value...

I am an overloader. Always have been. It produces better lather for me. In the 8 months that I have been shaving with soap and brush, I have yet to kill a single full size soap. A couple of samples and a couple of PIF soaps that were half gone when I got them, but not a single soap yet.

And when I say I overload, I mean I have enough for 3 passes on the head, 2 passes on each cheek, touchups as needed(if needed), and still washing some down the drain...

Im not miserly, nor am I wasteful. I load it until I think I have enough, then I dip the tips of my brush in some water and load it some more. When I am quite certain I have enough, I dip the tips one last time, and load just a little more. I have found that his gives me plenty of product for a wide range of hydration. I like a really slick soap, which means a lot of water, and if I dont load enough, I end up with a runny mess. So I load a lot, and I get great lather with very excellent slickness, and lots of room for "reconstitution" between passes, and even a little additional moisture as necessary...

That makes more sense Matsilainen. But why start off with that statement without saying what the 20th soap was? Rather confusing...
