It's sharp and it cuts. I like it...

Barbershop. Just an excellent performer on its first outing. The lather is rich and dense that is equal to GD’s Tallow based soaps. Scent is a bit citrus with Bergamot, Lemon and some Grapefruit front and center. Has a bit of woods and a light flower note that all blends in well.

Performance is well, top notch. I have a few of his Vegan soap bases such as Magnolia, Basique and Voyage and have enjoyed the performance on all three. This one here though beats them all, hands down. Like I mentioned before, it’s just as rich and thick as GD’s Tallow offerings and loves H2O just the same. Post so far is on par with the best I’ve ever experienced, Tallow or Vegan whether it be GD’s own or someone else’s. How it was done I have no idea and seriously can care less. It is just an excellent soap that not only reaches the bar, it surpasses it and sets a new standard on what a Vegan soap couldn’t do. Yes, Vegan is not supposed to be equal to a great Tallow soap. At least that’s what I thought. Barbershop Vegan in Janus formula has made me rethink the Tallow vs Vegan debate all over again. Yes, that good......

I used Grooming Dept.’s ‘Barbershop’ Janus Vegan Soap this morning for the first time. I was skeptical to try this Soap because in my experience I’ve never used a Vegan Soap that can match the performance of my top tier Tallow Soaps. There are several members of this forum that said Mo’s new Vegan Soap would make you rethink this, but I was still doubtful. I’d heard all the same things about Grooming Dept.’s previous Vegan Soaps as well, and although very good, in my experience they still weren’t quite on the level as my top Tallow Soaps.

On opening the tub I smell bright Citrus with Lemon and Grapefruit apparent to me. When lathered the scent really opens up with bright citrus and reminds me of Hermès ‘Eau d’Orange Vert’, a very nice Scent to my nose. This scent isn’t what comes to my mind when I think Barbershop, but it’s still a very nice scent nonetheless. I loaded heavy, because I have way too many Soaps, and because I really wanted to get a good idea of the Soaps performance. Nothing kills a Soaps performance like skimping on product. This Soap took plenty of water, which I like, and I was able to whip up a thick, dense lather in no time. The lather was glossy and had the consistency of sour cream.

I had three days growth and used my Blackland Brassbird OC to put ‘Barbershop’ to the test. I did a full three pass shave with touch up, and the results were outstanding. I ended up with a BBS Shave with no irritation. The Vegan Soaps I’ve used in the past were plenty slick, but lacked cushion as well as residual slickness. Not Grooming Dept.’s new Janus Vegan, it had every bit as much cushion and residual slickness as my top tier Tallow Soaps. Something else that stood out to me is the excellent post shave, my skin was soft and felt moisturized. I found myself faceturbating all morning, the post shave is definitely top tier in this Soap.

I’m going to have to eat crow on this one. I didn’t think it was possible for a Vegan Soap to be able to punch with the Top Tier Tallow Soaps. I was wrong. I don’t care whether or not my Soap has Tallow in it, I just want my Soap to perform. Mo’s new Janus Vegan Soap performs at the highest level in all aspects- slickness, cushion, residual slickness, and post shave. This Soap checks all the boxes for me, the old rules no longer apply. Well done Mohammad!

Anyone heard anything on aftershave releases? I’m holding off on more soaps till I can get aftershave pairings w them. My shaves seem incomplete without them.

Ok, I just finished a shave with Barbershop and all of my hesitations with Vegan soaps have been blown out of the water!! I have to admit that I was extremely impressed by SOAP but the scent did not overwhelm me and for that reason, I didn’t pay as much attention to it as I should have. This time, I had the right combination from brush, bowl, razor and pre and post shave materials! All I can say is.....WOW!! The lather that I built after a 20 second load was as good as any of the other bases that Mohammad has in the stable. It was extremely slick and had the right amount of fluff to it that is usually missing for me with Vegan soaps. The shave was amazing and the post shave feel is right there with all of the other soaps that have been released lately. I’m still in awe as I have been feeling my face every few minutes since shaving. I really don’t understand how Mohammad does it and I keep thinking things can’t continue to get better but I am shocked once again!! This Janus Vegan is up there neck and neck with Mallard for me and if you missed out on Barbershop, this is the MUST HAVE from the Janus Vegan base right now!
Happy Shaving folks!!
