Your thoughts on OneBlade

I hope it gets worked out as well.  I want to try a GEM in the razor but I want to do it after I know a feather is aligned properly.

That’s probably a good idea. If the Feather is already smiling, then the Gem might be full-on grinning… (Not cool.)

I know kwsher has one.  I'm curious if his has a smile with a feather blade...

Hi Andrew and rest, I have not noticed any smile in the various uses with mine. I will double check later today re: serial number etc. but I did pick it up last December.

I would also suspect that although I do agree the blade tension may make a blade more rigid, not sure how much more so with an SE and also with the unpredictability of this scenario.

I'd definitely be adamant about a replacement unit or full refund.

It’s interesting that your serial numbers are so far apart. I know andrewjs18 just got his, but isn’t yours RSP1 also a fairly recent acquisition? (Of course the razors could have just been pulled out from opposite ends of the same batch.)

I was thinking about placing an order myself, but reading these latest developments has put a dampener on my plans. Awaiting with curiosity what OneBlade’s response to your very valid concerns will be. I hope it all works out.

Yes - I just received mine on Friday.

Therefore, if this theory holds true then I would suspect that a sight flex in a SE blade which normally lays completely flat would do the same type of thing as a slant razor does by increasing the blade's apparent rigidity. In my experience, the higher the blade stiffness the better the shave.

So I stuck a gem in mine today and looked and there is a smile. The feather is flat.

Maybe its the fact the feathers lock in place. I have no idea who its works internally. And this smile might be the reason I don't like the Gems - maybe. Maybe the curvature is something you can feel because the gaps is changes with the length. That can't be good.

As to the feathers smiling - thats just wrong.

The Gems smile, because the blade doesn’t have the same slots that the Feather has, which fit around the nubs in the OneBlade head. As Brian said, the slight smile with Gems may increase blade rigidity, which can be a good thing. However, my guess (as a spectator from the sidelines, for now) is that if the Feather blade already has a smile to it (which it shouldn’t), then the Gem will probably smile even more — to the point where the cutting area of the blade may be altered too much.

The blades also probably have different geometry/rigidity to begin with. This could explain why the smiling Feather doesn't give a great shave and the smiling GEM seems to do just fine.
