Hi all,
Sorry for the delay in posting my thoughts. There was a huge delay in delivery to Whisker_Whacker, presumably due to the cold snap and winter weather - but I'm glad to see it made it safe and sound.
I was lucky enough to take 6 test drives with this razor and I was so impressed I've already bought one with both the M and HYB plates. Here are my notes from my 6 shaves in hopes that it might help others when considering this razor.
Day 1:
Today is day 1 with the Yates razor. At first blush, the razor isn't striking. The head is shaped oddly and the stonewash doesn't do much for me aesthetically. But shaving is only partially a beauty contest so let's see what this baby can do.
I got my answer pretty quickly: it cuts facial hair comfortably and effectively. I was really shocked at how well this razor glided across my face. The blade clamping and the square-ish head design weren't a problem at all. Instead, each direction I went was as comfortable as my best razor(s). Absolutely chuffed with my shave this morning.
I do not like the handle. It's at least a half inch too long for my preferences. On the other hand, it's incredibly light and seems to help with consistency and keeping track with my facial hair map and keeping a consistent direction. The real test for me is against the grain on my jaw line (I have to go parallel to the floor to go truly ATG there) and under my chin. No issues at all.
At this point, I'm looking forward to trying out the H plate eventually. But first, I'll try a more aggressive blade with the M plate.
Day 2:
Day 2 using the Yates 921-M and I continue to be very impressed. I wanted to pop a sharper blade to see if perhaps I could up the efficiency slightly so that I could limit the touch-ups. For the most part it worked. One thing I noticed is that the lather does seem to be a bit built up under the blade at times. Not the end of the world but it does seem to lead to me having to clear the razor in the sink a bit more often. Tomorrow, I'm upping the ante with the H plate.
Day 3:
Day 3 of the Yates razor and it's onto the H plate. Still smooth and I didn't notice more blade feel but oddly enough I had a tad bit more irritation than with the M plate. I will go back to an Astra SP to see if a less sharp blade will smooth it out.
Day 4:
Second use of the Yates H plate. This shave with a new Astra SP was slightly harsher which was my experience with this plate and the BIC the prior day. I think maybe my face just doesn't love this plate. I'll give one more use of the M plate to ensure it's the H plate's fault and not the blade.
Day 5:
The Yates HYB didn't provide quite the same smoothness as the stainless steel M plate. Maybe it's the material or the weight. But the open and closed combs felt similarly mild and comfortable. Just a hair less efficient than I found the stainless M plate.
Day 6:
As I closed out with the M plate I instantly had a phenomenal shave just like the first two uses.

Shave review of Yates
1st shave: I received the Yates the same day as my new WR1 .80 dc so put them head to head against each other with the Yates H plate. Both with new personna med preps. The Yates had the smoother feel as far as irritation to the skin but the bbs lasted just a bit longer with the WR1. Based off the shave, id take the comfort of the Yates over the extra few hrs of bbs.
2nd shave: evened out the face with the Yates H plate with the same med prep blade. Another smooth shave but got a few weepers, I used a bit too much pressure.
3rd shave: tried out the M plate. Was quite mild but still very smooth and efficient. No weepers but bbs didnt last quite as long as H plate. Just a hair smoother than the H plate but I’d rather use the H if I only had one plate.
4th shave: tried out the brass hybrid plate. OC side wasn’t my bag but I rarely use OC since I shave daily. Found the SB side smoother than the M plate which leads me to believe I’d be more keen to the bead blasted or machined finish if he had a whole razor with that finish.
5th shave: Ti blackbird vs H plate. Ti bird is a lot lighter but both provided excellent shaves. Would love to try a H plate in Ti against the bird.
6th shave: finished up my Yates tour with the H plate alone. Super smooth shaver. Once Ti becomes available, I will 100% be buying. Was very hesitant on this razor due to looks. But it’s one of those tools everyone should have. A pleasure to use. Thanks DFS and Jake for making this passaround possible. Razor will be out to next participant tomorrow.
