I decided to check the gaps on my secondhand Wolfman razors and one of them is definitely not as sold. However it is pretty hard to tell for sure the actual gap with a feeler gauge. Does anyone have any tips?

I have a WR1 that doesn't appear to be .61 but can't tell for certain if it is .67 or .74

How tight a fit should the blades of the gauge be?

This is why I don't like the idea of a feeler gauge, unless it is the actual size. Doable, but expensive. Putting leaves together might cause inaccuracies, and the blade is going to flex to an extent. Go/no go feeler gauges would probably be best, but you can only use such if you have one of the exact measurement to check with.

Correct me if I'm wrong  Big Grin  Full disclosure, I don't have feeler gauges and have never tried it on a razor ... but I've worked on cars and such, and know whereof I speak.

Well all I have is a feeler gauge, true I needed to use at least two leaves/blades, i.e. .70 + .04 or .63 + .04

I've been meaning to pick up a set. Just watch the razor blade doesn't flex when you insert the gauges, and get as close as you can.

My measurements with the feeler gauge (usually 2 leaves/blades together) have always been spot on or close to the advertised gap. Always use a used DE blade because you will damage the blade by sliding the gauge(s) in and out. They need to smoothly slide within the measured gap and depending the razor at a slight downward angle. Sometimes it will slide comfortably in the middle of the gap but then get stuck as you move the gauges sideways which shows that the gap is not always the same throughout the whole length of the cutting edge.
In short, maybe it cannot give you the exact measurement but it's damn close enough to know if you are within the range and tolerances of the gap you are trying to measure. This has been my experience.

Thanks Max. I did use an old blade when trying to measure the gap. This is helpful advice particularly about the smooth sliding across the gap. Will try again.

Based on the smooth slide it is a .67

Good to know, it does cut closer than my other .61 so not unexpected

I know a guy who’s 1.25 was actually closer to 1.45, so mistakes can happen.

That said - with the way these things get traded around - with no identifiable markings to identify one gap or another - I’m sure that mistakes happen quite a bit.

I've ordered 3 directly from James, and IIRC 2 weeks before shipping confirmation was par for the course. It also depends on how much volume he has at one time or another. Yesterday was Canada Day BTW, like our 4th of July.
