I obtained a polished stainless stand as part of a trade with some minor usage micro scratches. I tested a small area with Flitz and a very fine polishing cloth and found I introduced more micro scratches than I fixed. It didn’t sting too much since I knew what the stand looked like previously. But after that experiment I know for certain I wouldn’t attempt anything else on any of the other polished items I have. I do find the polished surface to wipe down very easily with minimal effort after use. In general my mirror polished items have held up well and the polish imo is second to none.

So it would take something  much less aggressive to get those type of scratches, you were talkin about, out? Just wondered what kind of setup it would take

Afraid I can’t be of much help with any specifics... and it’s possible that someone with some skills may have done a better job for sure. All I know is that as much as I’d hate to see some scratches on my razor that I now know that I’d hate to see three times the amount from me not knowing what I’m doing. I’d never shy away though from the mirror finishes out of fear of scratching them though. A ways back I had an email exchange with James inquiring about sending back items for a touch up polish. While he did acknowledge that it would be something he’d like to offer he had no plans to even think about listing it as a service until his current demands slowed considerably. Whenever that may be who knows. Until then I’ll just use with care and enjoy them.

Flitz is nonabrasive. It "shouldn't" scratch. I tried to polish scratches out of a top cap and came very close to original condition, with time. If I used too much pressure, I'd introduce scratches I assume from the cloth, even tho I used a microfiber towel. When I got close, I switched to a Flitz brand towel and super light pressure, barely brushing. I had read you need to polish in the same direction of the grain, which I think runs comb to comb. I wound up with a pretty nice job but it took a looong time.

That's interesting to know. I have noticed the same towel effect micro scratches on a coffee pot or sink fixtures. It's amazing something so tough as stainless steel gets down to such a delicate luxury finish gets down to the point we are talking about.

For a superb shine perfecting wipe down I’ve had great luck with the blue Sunshine cloths. I was using a Maas cloth that was pretty good but the blue Sunshine gives better final results in a cloth with a softer texture. Zero worry of adding any scratches and I have seen some small ones disappear even though it is not marketed to do that.

Polishing metals I've had good results with SemiChrome, Fitz, and Wenol. NeverDull is also good, but not as effective as the aforementioned.

Making sure the material you're using is clean when you start is also important. If the cloth, paper towel, or whatever is contaminated with any grit it can introduce scratches.

I suppose that is common sense, but mention it anyhow.
