friend of mine letting me take his slot - already have 1.15 and 1.25, like them, don't love them. I am thinking 1.45, or should I just go ahead and get 1.55?

For sure 1.55. Go for the gusto ! I've shaved with a friend's 1.55 and it is Awesome ! If I ever get the 3rd email I'm going for it myself.
