Wolfman WR2 Head Discussion

ScientificShaves  Henery, I'm doing a bit of a scientific experiment of my own, albeit a very subjective one, unless I can get others to join in ... I'm trying to see if Christopher Bradley's assertion that an OC is equal to one blade gap higher than the corresponding SB. He (Karve Shaving) says this on his website somewhere, relative to the F OC plate equaling a G SB plate.

I'm only 2 shaves in on my little experiment, and on todays shave I incorporated your X pattern to the best of my understanding of the technique. So .... I don't think I've ever had a closer/smoother shave.

I used a WR2 DC 1.15 OC/1.25 SB with a new Wizamet and MDC for the lather. I tried your minimalist lather approach and I don't think I achieved that, but the X pattern was really effective.

As for the OC versus the SB ... hard to say ... it seems to me the 1.15 OC performed as well as the 1.25 SB, but I don't know if that would classify it as equal. I need to experiment with a few other heads and see what I think.

JimmyH  in response to your statement about OC vs SB Matt from Razor Emporium gave a good explanation in one of his latest YouTube videos and if my memory serves me right I believe it was brought up in his review of the Russian Start razor.  You might want to check it out.

Thank you Dragonsbeard. I wish he would have spent some more time with the comparison, but he definitely found the OC of the same gap as the SB to be closer. ... now ... where can I buy one of those Homelike Start razors ??? 

Jimmy there is a pretty lengthy Thread on it started by GlazedBoker Gus and a pass around that I'm on and from what I've read It seems like its a smooth yet efficient razor. That's also based on a friend of mine Shavemd Mark feedback after using one for a while now. Not to go off topic I'm waiting as the company is also coming out with a new version of the Gibbs adjustable and if it's as good as the original then I'm all in but that is a very tall order to match the original.

Does anyone have any blade gap recommendations for someone who wants more efficiency than a Timeless 68 SB in stainless steel but not as aggressive as a Timeless 95 SB in stainless? The 95 had too much blade for me that if felt harsh, but I would appreciate some more efficiency than 68. Love the smoothness on the 68 though.

I'm the same with the Timeless .68/.95
I've ordered the Wolfman WR2 1.15 OC.
I may end up with the 1.05 when the final decision is made.

I would suggest a WR1 in .74, or .86. If you are eager for a WR2 maybe a 1.05.

I found the 1.05 WR2 and the Timeless .68 to be comparable in efficiency. I would recommend a 1.15 WR2 or a .74 or .80 WR1.

BBS-1 vs Wr2

I'm interested in peoples thoughts re: these razors, many comparisons have been made with some preferring the Wr2 in design and performance over the BBS-1
Does the BBS-1 lose its appeal and value due to this?
If the Wr2 is a better performer then who would want a BBS-1 at the crazy prices people ask?

I notice that more & more used Wolfmans are coming available at realistic prices....

Thanks everyone! I wasn't sure if .95 wr2 might be too much but it's great to hear others recommending 1.05 and even 1.15! I wasn't sure if I could go up that high but I feel a lot more comfortable with some more options. Thanks again.

Really hard to make the comparison with the BBS 1 to a WR2 as there are many blade gap and baseplate options to choose from with the WR2 head whereas the BBS 1 is what it is and I believe James stated the blade gap is 1.00 somewhere although I may be wrong. I’ve done a side by side using the BBS 1 vs the WR2 .95 DC and I found the BBS 1 slightly more efficient so comparable gaps I’d give it to the BBS 1.. with that said I don’t know how it would compare to let’s say a WR2 1.05 or 1.15 as I have not shaved with either as I prefer the higher gap Wolfman razors.
I’m not sure if the price on BBS 1 has been effective by the WR2 or WR1 but your right about more Wolfman razors have been up for sale more often now but remember there have been a lot more made within the last couple of years. With that said I do see more Wolfman razors for sale but most of what I see are the lower gap WR1’s and not the high gap WR2’s. Especially in Titanium.

The BBS 1 is still considered by most as the most collectible modern day razor and even more so if it’s a Titanium version so it’s more about supply and demand as to how much they are worth to an individual.

I tend to agree with most of his conclusions.  The 1.05 WR2 is very close to a BBS1, IMO.  The one thing about a BBS1 is the head is super light, giving you a noticeably handle heavy razor.  For this reason, I like the WR2 better as a tool.

Prices of BBS1s seem to have taken a hit.  Whether it is because of the WR2 or just because the market seems to be down in general, I dunno.  I've always thought they were overpriced and DuFour now makes better shavers.  I'm a large gap lover too, though.  Those razors in WR1 and WR2 seem to sell much better than the lower gapped cousins.
