Lavender & Cedar (Crowne & Crane) ★★★★ 90% lavender, 10% cedar

The scent on the puck is quiet, but once you add a little water, the fragrance fills the room. It’s a nice smell, a natural lavender, slightly bitter, with a hint of iodine and labdanum. If you say the word ‘cedar’ while you sample the lather, you can smell that wood, too. Without that hint, you might never notice it. The fragrance lasts a few hours, but it’s never bold. It smells mostly like soap, and once your shave’s done, you’re going to smell freshly scrubbed.

Crowne & Crane’s tallow versions remind me a lot of Stirling’s soaps. Their lather is rich and thick and gives very good protection. Residual glide, too, is admirable.  At the end of the shave my face was tight for about fifteen minutes, but that disappeared, and the rest of the day my skin felt plush.

We’ve also been using Crowne & Crane’s bath soaps. Like the shave soap, they don’t give up much scent until they’re wet, but once they’re wet, they smell great. The rose is our favorite.
