Vintage Ralph Lauren Safari shaving soap. This has gotten mixed reviews, but for me it lathers just as well as vintage Floris and Penhaligon's soaps, and it has a lovely fragrance.

Maggard's Tobacco & Leather

Good soap. I still think this one should be called Leather & Tobacco, because the leather is very prominent and the tobacco is very indistinct...I would never guess it as a tobacco scent, but I LOVE the leather quality to it...

Fitjar Fjellheim shaving soap. Lathers like crazy, lather is very slick and stable. Aftershave feeling is very smooth and refreshing.

The puck is richly scented with rosemary, resin, cedar, lavender, citrus and oakmoss, all hinting at good things to come. But mix in a few drops of water and the scent quickly loses its complexity, giving way to a soliflore rose. It's not an unpleasant rose, perhaps it's a little medicinal, but it's just not as intricate as the smell of the raw soap. Usually the moss and woods linger after the fruits and florals fade away. Chypre Rose Concerto seems to work in reverse. I'll keep fiddling with this one. Maybe my schnoz is on upside down.

Little water is needed to make a fine grained lather. It's airier than clay packed soaps, but it gives good protection, and leaves the cheeks smooth without feeling waxy or greasy. All this even though the formula doesn't contain lanolin.

Just wanted to say that I really enjoy reading your impressions on the various soaps you use. Thanks for sharing your observations!

It’s not always easy to describe a soap’s scent or performance, so I appreciate any and all who find a way to do so.

Whenever I go to shave, I assume there’s someone else on the planet shaving, so I say “I’m gonna go shave, too.”
