Lost Souls (Ethos) pine & horse mint
Shave 7

Looking at Nero’s pictures makes me pretty homesick. I spent a lot of time climbing in those mountains when I was younger. His images bring back happy memories of ponderosa, wet granite, Douglas firs, and sweet mint. So today I picked up Frank’s Lost Souls just to refreshen the memories, and did it ever. This soap smells like a summer tromp through high mountain meadows. Thanks to both of you.

Nero, about your Saponificio Varesino soaps. The first shave with one of these pucks is always a trial for me. I don’t notice any drying, but then I live in a swampy climate where I never feel dry. But I do remember that the first few shaves with a fresh Saponificio Varesino soap leave my skin tender and occasionally dappled with irritation. It’s a nuisance at first, but stick with them. I found that the performance improves with continued use, and a long bloom may help.

DanLaw, the Feather ProGuards have been nice to me. They clean me up pretty good with only one WTG pass. The SoftGuards, however, were just too tuggy. I had to give myself three passes to get clean, and all that scraping led to some tender skin. I would stick with the ProGuards if Shane weren’t constantly tempting me. It looks like he’s brought out a Vector Lite baseplate. I wonder if that would let me shave with a Feather Pro more than two days in a row? I do love the smooth feel of an unguarded blade.

But all that’s in the offing. These days I’m just amazed by the gentle efficiency of the Lambda Athena. I’m getting remarkable three-pass shaves with no irritation at all. Using this razor is like driving a Bentley. It’s gorgeous heap of metal on the outside, and you may think at first that it’s all just bulk and show. But then you start it up and hit the highway, and you soon discover its performance is as beautiful as its styling. That’s the Athena, right there.

Abbate Y La Mantia - Buttero (hard)

First time using this hard soap formula, and I got a great shave. Was a little timid seeing all the sodium-________ ingredients, especially at the front of the list, as that has been a disaster for many a maker. But have no fear. Easy to load, lathers thick, doesn't dissipate, and has all the other qualities requisite for a great shave. Add to that, this Buttero is the best leather scent I've come across. Layered, even gourmand at times. And pretty darn natural smelling... a feature I have never found in other leather scents. Thanks Bouki for biting the bullet on these AYLM hard pucks.

I couldn’t figure out how to post the image. Guess I’m more computer-dumb than I thought.
