What soap/cream did you use today?

Abbate y La Mantia's Babylon line of shaving soaps draws inspiration from the the three excavated gates of that ancient Mesopotamian city: Ishtar gate in the north, Marduk gate to the east, and Urash gate to the south. Unfortunately, the fourth gate to the west is now submerged underwater. Each gate is dedicated to a Babylonian god. Ishtar, the belle of the pantheon, watched over love and war. Marduk, the top banana among Babylonian gods, was known for his power and wisdom. And let’s not forget Urash, the goddess with green fingers, whose job it was to promote fertility.

To be sure, I never made a connection between Babylon and shaving. Judging by the portraits cut into stone, Babylonian men favored the great bosky beard. But Abbate y La Mantia’s quirky take on soap cookery has managed to brew up a unique scent and formulation for each of these gate gods. I’m loving Ishtar’s deep floral oud, and I’m thinking I may need to dip my brush into the other two offerings as well.
