A few months ago, I tried Abbate y La Mantia's
Garibaldi, which pays tribute to Italian tobacco. If I hadn’t tried it, I wouldn’t have been able to detect the same scent in today’s
Tabacco Blu soap. There's quite a bit of synthetic menthol in this puck, and it covers the tobacco pretty well. It takes an experienced nose to pick out the leafy notes. And there's this too: their interpretation of tobacco seems to have more in common with pastry than with the flue-cured brightleaf I’m most familiar with. To me this blue tobacco conjures up memories of Moravian spice cookies. The warm, spicy aroma is pleasant enough, but it's not the sort of smell I first associate with a stogie or a pipe. For all that, the lather is good for slapping around the face, and when combined with some D-menthol, it makes for a refreshing start to what is bound to be a warm day.
