Fleur de France turns my lips numb. Really. First they feel sort of hairy, and then they go kind of frozen. It feels like the topical anesthetic the dentist puts on your gums before he pumps you full of lidocaine. The numbness disappears as soon as I rinse, so I’m not too worried. But it’s odd.

Robert Louis Stevenson’s first book, An Inland Voyage, recounts his paddling adventure through the canals of Belgium and northern France in the summer of 1876. Each chapter is short and witty, and just the right size for another soap-of-the-book odyssey.
