When I first started in this whacko hobby Mitchell’s Wool Fat (The Fat) was all the rage but had a reputation of being persnickety to lather.  Then came hoards of artisanal soaps with a cornucopia of scents and we seldom see Mitchell’s mentioned anymore.  That is too bad because The Fat is as good as it’s ever been.  My first puck was picked up on a bundle buy from a college kid who likely dove into the hobby with Dads money.  I bought several items from him but one was a puck of Mitchell’s all wrapped up in the pleated paper at looking oh so official.  That puck and I got along from day-one and although I didn’t have the Mitchell’s dish it still resided in a worthy pottery dish from Mikasa of Japan. (A puck of L’Occitane Cade now inhabits that bowl).  When the soap wore out I bought another, this time with the eclectic coffret and it’s a joy to use.  This puck is about half gone but the scent is still awesome.  Most folks seem to describe it as “soapy” but we know that’s a misnomer as soap with no scent added smells nothing like Mitchell’s.  I get it.  More traditional scented.  But as far as traditional scents (whatever that means) go, this one smells up-scale and is so wonderful.  Stays with me throughout the shave and lingers for a couple of hours after.  I paired it with a pre-war Gillette Tech fat handle which I find beautiful and shaved away knowing my Grandad could have used the same razor and soap.

Shave 1  ≈  122 g left

Here in the shack it’s hotter than a jalapeño in a south Texas chili. 88°F inside, and it’s still not even spring. Can you believe it? Summer sneaked up on us while we were still breaking in our winter boots. And these old rusty ceiling fans aren’t cutting it when it comes to keeping me cool.

But fear not, for I have found a solution to beat the heat, thanks to the wisdom of our general mentor, TommyCarioca. Before each shave, I now take an ice cube and rub it all over my face. It’s like an alpine breeze blowing down the canyon at the end of a hot summer’s day. Not only does the ice numb my skin and take away the sting of the blade, but it also reduces swelling and tightens the pores. And if that weren't enough, it even makes my beard stand up straight, leading to a closer, smoother shave.

Now, don't get me wrong, the relief only lasts for a few minutes until I step outside and get hit with that wall of heat. But for those few precious moments, I feel like I’m sitting on a porch with a tall glass of lemonade, just watching the world float by.
