About a decade ago, I ordered a plastic jar of Barrister & Mann’s Cheshire soap to replace a rusting can of Edge Gel that was leaving unsightly marks on my bathtub. A fine specimen of shaving soap, Cheshire proved to be a veritable godsend. Its sweet lemony scent coupled with its fantastic lather was a joy and a revelation. Yet, I am left to wonder what fork my life’s path would have taken, had the soap been a dud.
As it happened, Cheshire lured me into amassing a ridiculous stockpile of shaving soaps. Had I foreseen the financial consequences this seemingly innocuous choice would make, I might have chosen the simpler path of replacing my bathtub outright. Indeed, that would have been the thriftier option.
Barrister & Mann was founded by Will Carius in 2013. The company was born out of Will’s frustration with his sensitive skin and the lack of quality shaving soaps available on the market at the time. While still in law school, Will began experimenting with making his own shaving soap in his kitchen, and after months of trial and error, he developed a formula that he was happy with. He started selling his soap on online forums, and it quickly gained a following among wet shaving enthusiasts.
Over the years, Barrister & Mann has expanded its product line to include a wide variety of grooming products, including aftershaves, hand soaps, and beard oils. The company has also continued to innovate, regularly introducing new scents and bases that have helped it maintain its position as one of the top artisanal brands in shavedom.
