Clay Face

Bergamotto di Calabria (Abbate y La Mantia) soapy lemon-orange
Shave 1 ・ 78 g left

PRESENTATION Abbate y La Mantia has spared little expense in packaging their soap. The box it comes in is constructed of stiff card stock and adorned with two-color printing. For the polyglots among us, information is given in three languages: Italian, English, and Latin. Inside, the puck is encased in a flimsy tin canister that yields to the slightest pressure. Nonetheless, the label is expertly designed, and the purple color uses raised ink to give the impression of embossing.

SCENT The fragrance of bergamot is a medley of lemon and orange, yet in this soap these pleasant notes are hidden under a mélange of soapy smells, leaving only a whisper of citrus in its wake. A drop of vanilla and a pinch of musk soften its feel, making the scent passable but not enthralling.

LATHER As the label loudly proclaims, this is a very hard soap. French milling is proof that it will endure for hundreds of shaves. After allowing it to bloom for ten minutes I gave it three-hundred swirls with a damp synthetic brush. The result was a light, copious, and foamy lather, typical of a soap whose first element is sodium palmate. Fans of Pré de Provence No. 63 or Bergamot & Thyme will see many similarities. It glided on smoothly and lasted through two passes, yet neither slip nor cushion were particularly impressive.

THE UPSHOT No harm was done today, but I may hesitate to shave with Bergamotto di Calabria several days in a row. The soapy scent was a disappointment, and the foamy lather didn’t inspire much confidence. Nevertheless, the presentation is elegant, the mare’s milk seems to have done its job keeping my skin supple, and the apparent durability of the puck suggests good value for the money.

I used that brand once and was disappointed as well. Good comparison to PdP #63 and why mine is set aside for perhaps shower usage. Tomorrow's another day !

Just got this in. Excellent shave as always. Unfortunately for me though, it picked up some of the scent of one of my pet peeve scents (Barbershop) at the source. Glass half full: I'll throw some essential oil on it for my future shaves. Maybe that's a full glass.

Love that Jade brush!  I accidentally dropped mine and now it has a very small chip near the knot
