Yesterday I picked up another book, Rafael Sabbatini’s Captain Blood (1922), a swashbuckler in the grand old tradition. The subtitle is “His Odyssey.” Taking that as an omen, I’ve decided to set out on an adventure of my own, revisiting every soap in the hoard and reporting on its condition. Currently my collection stands at 150 soaps, so this journey will take a few months. I figure I’ll make it back to the top of the rotation by the end of June.
The first stop on my grand tour is Wholly Kaw’s Fougère Parfaite. The fragrance – a take on Brut aftershave – is quite mild and gets lost in the lather, not really what I hoped for in a ‘perfect fougère.’ But the shave itself is especially smooth and comfortable due to the donkey milk and other emollients. I added a drop of menthol for a refreshing chill.

When shavers mention cushion, they aren’t talking about bouncy lather; they usually mean how well a soap shields against blade abrasion. The thickness of the lather doesn't automatically indicate how much cushion it has. A thin lather may provide a surprising amount of protection while a thick one can be quite lacking. But one observation generally proves true: soaps made of animal fat tend to have lots of cushion. Beef tallow, for instance, is a popular ingredient in many shaving soaps since it provides a comfortable shave and helps sensitive skin heal. That’s why, after testing a few tallow-free soaps, I like to come back to Mike’s well-larded soap as it takes away the sting and lets my tender skin rest.

It's never been that inviting, so I've been loading heavy just to get through the puck. Sounds like you got a jar from a better batch.(01-17-2023, 09:19 PM)Bouki Wrote: La Fougère Parfaite (Wholly Kaw) chilled fougère

Interesting Sir Bouki as I have seen you more than once say the scent is light on yours. Was it stronger before and dissapated? Mine is quite strong so I'll count myself as fortunate and will get to mine soon as well. Looking forward to the Bouki Soap Tour !

That's what had me wondering when you'd post your thoughts as I highly respect your insight on scents.(01-17-2023, 09:29 PM)Dave in KY Wrote:Dave, my tub of this soap started off smelling light.
