La Fougère Parfaite (Wholly Kaw) chilled fougère
Shave 24 ・ 65 g left

Yesterday I picked up another book, Rafael Sabbatini’s Captain Blood (1922), a swashbuckler in the grand old tradition. The subtitle is “His Odyssey.” Taking that as an omen, I’ve decided to set out on an adventure of my own, revisiting every soap in the hoard and reporting on its condition. Currently my collection stands at 150 soaps, so this journey will take a few months. I figure I’ll make it back to the top of the rotation by the end of June.

The first stop on my grand tour is Wholly Kaw’s Fougère Parfaite. The fragrance – a take on Brut aftershave – is quite mild and gets lost in the lather, not really what I hoped for in a ‘perfect fougère.’ But the shave itself is especially smooth and comfortable due to the donkey milk and other emollients. I added a drop of menthol for a refreshing chill.

Interesting Sir Bouki as I have seen you more than once say the scent is light on yours. Was it stronger before and dissapated? Mine is quite strong so I'll count myself as fortunate and will get to mine soon as well. Looking forward to the Bouki Soap Tour !

When shavers mention cushion, they aren’t talking about bouncy lather; they usually mean how well a soap shields against blade abrasion. The thickness of the lather doesn't automatically indicate how much cushion it has. A thin lather may provide a surprising amount of protection while a thick one can be quite lacking. But one observation generally proves true: soaps made of animal fat tend to have lots of cushion. Beef tallow, for instance, is a popular ingredient in many shaving soaps since it provides a comfortable shave and helps sensitive skin heal. That’s why, after testing a few tallow-free soaps, I like to come back to Mike’s well-larded soap as it takes away the sting and lets my tender skin rest.

Love your definition of cushion.  When I first started back into old school the word cushion seemed to mean a “push back” somehow and it seemed that fluffy Italian softies were touted as kings of cushion.  Well, it took me about 7 minutes to realize cushion could not mean that at all but HAD to be more micro in nature.  Your definition exactly explains how I view cushion these days.

Sunday and Monday both made the Sir Henrys Finals.  Kentucky Rain is an awesome scent which is a great thing being the tub (lovely packaging by the way) is over stuffed.  Like a jar of MdC this one is filled to the brim.  I don’t know how many shaves are in it but it may outlast me.  Great soap, great scent, great performance.

Dave, my tub of this soap started off smelling light. In fact, it sort of smelled like the water in an indoor pool. Kind of a weird chlorine side note. It's never been that inviting, so I've been loading heavy just to get through the puck. Sounds like you got a jar from a better batch.

Today, after moving a bunch of snow, I was in the mood for some summertime and Jacinthe got the nod.  It’s the tomato leaf in this one that really rings my bell.  I love tomatoes.  Grow a bunch every year.  Love the taste and the versatility and the challenge of different varieties.  Shoot, I even enjoy the race from last frost to killing frost each year.  The charts say I have 130 days from last frost May 17th to first frost Sep 25th but that is a dirty lie!  We always get a hard June frost, sometimes mid June and it’s not uncommon to see a hard frost mid September so my true tomato growing season outdoors is about 100 days and with tomatoes I need every single one.  When they are on I eat tomatoes every day and my dehydrator is going nuts and I’m making sauce to bottle or freeze.  Yes, I love tomatoes enough that I can’t stand grocery store tomatoes this have to preserve my own.  Anyway, as much as I like eating them, my favorite is pruning the .  The smell of tomato leaf is Devine and I have to convince myself to leave some leaves on the vine.  This soap has that leaf note in it and…..I’m a fan.

Oh man, sorry to hear. Mine is definitely strong with a Capital S of the typical Brut goodness. That's what had me wondering when you'd post your thoughts as I highly respect your insight on scents.
