Today’s scent is far less challenging than yesterday’s peculiar Earth of Mankind. Batavia Barber is a simple cologne done in the Italian style. If you like Acqua di Parma’s Colonia, you’ll probably like this too.

I’m happy to write that today’s lathering went better, too. Taking HoosierShave’s excellent advice, I bloomed this soap with hot water. It loaded like a dream, and the lather, which I made on my south paw, came out far thicker and creamier than yesterday’s.

So what was the difference between these two Oaken Lab soaps? Well, when I compare them, I see that their textures are really quite different. Batavia Barber is lumpy and soft, while Earth of Mankind is flat, solid, and hard – a true hockey puck. I imagine that at some point Earth of Mankind got hot enough to melt. All the air bubbled out of the mix, so when it cooled its texture became much more dense. That’s why yesterday it was a pain to load.

And HoosierShave, I’ve been eyeing these Oaken Lab soaps for a long time. I appreciate what you and vtmax and Rudds have to say about them, but the real reason I ordered them was because I have a lot of friends from Indonesia. I’m even learning their language. So, I wanted a set of soaps from there too. Absolutely no regrets, and I’m looking forward to many happy shaves.

Hi, Polovez. How does the Active version compare to the Classic Barbus soap that comes in the blue jar? Any notable differences in scent or performance?

Glad today turned out better. The puck sounds like it needed some hydration from that hockey puck description. 

Here’s a new pour of the recently released Serious Moonlight. Smooth, forgiving, and lathers a dream. I love the creaminess imparted by the yogurt inclusion. 

Haunting scents that endure and linger for me. Sanctum and its stillness. Plein Air’s late summer saying goodbye to friends in an Irish village as I head up to Dublin and the autumn leaves saddens me slightly but an emotion I enjoy and glad I experienced. 

Art of Shaving - Unscented (tallow)

I had a headache all day (I think from a co-worker's candle at the office) so I needed something scentless. This was my first soap over 9 years ago (I had a few creams prior to this soap)... still one of the best. I like the underlying scent, it reminds me of worn leather and it's a little creamy.
