Fridays I like to watch an episode of Endeavour, a British crime drama set in the 1960s. The scripts, sets, and period costuming carry me right back to the sights and sounds of the time. But until we get smellovision, I’ll have to rely on Barrister & Mann’s Reserve line to reveal the scents of the Sixties. Lucky for me, Will has made one soap that encapsulates all the major olfactory trends of that decade. Classic, based on Gillette’s Sun Up aftershave of 1964, is a combination of fougère notes sprinkled with bay rum and warm spices. Seems like Gillette’s people couldn’t decide what they really wanted to make, so they dumped everything they had into one bottle and gave it a good shake. What came out was Brut mixed with Old Spice, a little something for every shaver no matter his taste. Unfortunately this approach rarely works, and Gillette's Sun Up eventually faded away. The same fate seems to have befallen Barrister & Mann’s Classic, too. I no longer see it among their offerings.

Great post, as always, Bouki.

Btw, been meaning to ask if you don't mind, which Gillette Platinum are you using? Mind showing a shot of the blade (not the box/package, bc that's not definitive enough, unfortunately, as there are two different versions in the same packaging... and others yet in different packaging... so, at least 3 versions of Gillette Platinum going around right now).

Btw x2, I kinda like the different takes on Sun Up (B&M, PAA, maybe others I can't remember at the moment).
...BUT I think it's in the "too much and too strong" category, for me, at least. Very nice to go sniff in the jar, but not something I want hanging around my face for very long. JUST me. How do you feel on the scent?

Taylor of Old Bond Street - Shaving Shop

It was this upcoming week nine years ago that I placed my first order for wet shaving gear. After saving so much money along the way Big Grin Wink it is time to celebrate by using one of the two creams in that order from Royal Shave. (The other was Proraso Green, which is why I used the correlating aftershave tonight.)
