Tresmegistus from Declaration Grooming was a name and scent that intrigued me for years before I finally pulled the trigger.  The trigger of the disappointment gun….. first off, the soap itself preforms flawlessly.  Really top shelf stuff.  But the scent?  Well, it’s pleasant for sure and it smells like a cousin of Terre dHermes (which is excellent by the way and well duped by DR Harris Windsor and Fine Accoutrements L’Orange Noir).  But Tresmegistus is a third cousin twice removed thus lacks the pedigree to ride in the front seat of the family van.  The scent is like comparing an anemic 74 Mustang II with a 4 cylinder engine with a 65 Shelby GT350.  Sure, both carry the Mustang moniker but there really is no comparison.  Will I finish the tub?  Nah, most likely one of the kids will cart it home or it’ll end up on a PIF table at a shaver meet-up.  Great performance but the scent is about like raising the brides veil at the wedding and finding out you married your cousin Bob.

Yuzu Rose Patchouli (Declaration Grooming) dirty citrus rose

Smooth, plump, and bodacious, this Milksteak base is the Liberace of lather. Feels like I’m shaving with whipped velvet and a fur-lined razor. Good stuff, you ask? Well, once I saw a video of Scott (the owner of Declaration Grooming) taking a blade to his face after he’d drunk himself into a near stupor. He wanted to prove that his lather could protect his skin no matter how impaired he was. After some truly horrible swipes, he managed to stumble away cross-eyed, but nick free. That may be an silly approach to marketing a product, but there’s no denying this soap gives a gorgeous shave. The stuff’s got more body than Beyoncé.

What about the scent? Just about anything Shawn Maher of Chatillon Lux puts his hand to turns out brilliant. But of all his many fragrances, I think Yuzu Rose Patchouli is my favorite. A quirky blend of the earthy and the sublime, it smells a wee bit skanky at first, sort of like your great-auntie's powder room. But after a few minutes everything comes together, and you feel like you've spent your morning wandering through the Chelsea Flower Show.
