A repeat of yesterday’s shave with only one difference: today I used the Karve Overlander razor instead of yesterday’s Henson AL13. The Henson is certainly a smooth operator, but this Overlander, wow, nothing but silk. Granted, it doesn’t take much off with each pass, but on those mornings when you wake up extra early to find you really don’t have much beard to work with, its mild approach is ideal. Pair it with Ethos Colonia and you’ve got a very pleasant entry into a grey dawn.

There has been some discussion among Nero, TommyCarioca, and me as to whether this soap is heavily pepper forward or heavily rose forward. Nero's jar is rose forward with not much pepper, whereas Tommy's and mine are pepper forward with not much rose. We discussed whether we had different batches, which I personally still think is possible, but the plot has thickened in my neck of the woods.
I sent some R&BP samples to friends on Friday, and curiosity led me to gather the samples by excavating straight down into the puck. This is not something I normally do. Anyway, we have a lot happening at home right now, and I was really rushing and tired, so I put the puck aside and forgot about it. When I went to put it away earlier tonight, out of the excavation arose a delightful rose forward scent, along with an almost too subtle hint of pepper. Sound familiar Nero? OTOH the top of the puck was still very pepper forward.
From my amateur vantage point, looking from the outside in, it seems that the ingredients are not being blended and homogenized as intended. Either that, or they are not staying blended and homogenized. I have not yet reached out to Jonathan & Kaycie, but I plan to do so shortly after making this post.
Jonathan and I finally connected via phone, and I asked if he and Kaycie could write a few words in response to this discussion for me to post. They kindly replied yesterday evening, and with Thu-Rose-Day almost upon us, I thought I should pass the word along without further delay:
"We switched suppliers of black pepper essential oil recently. We can smell the difference in the two batches we have in stock. We will go back to the old supplier but it was not available when we needed it. That is the nature of natural products. It’s not produced in a lab but in a field so there will be variations.
As far as the shave soap smelling more of rose below the surface, that would be because the rose is the higher note of the scent profile so it will dissipate more quickly. If this is bothersome you can put the lid back on the soap once it is dry."
My own reaction was sympathetic but mixed. The idea that availability led them to switch suppliers is eminently understandable, especially in light of everything that's going on with supply chains these days. Also, the fact that they will go back to the old supplier seems commendable and quite reasonable. OTOH the proposed remedy - replacing the cap once the soap is dry - leaves something to be desired IME. YMMV
