Of all the myriad decisions I’ll make today, how I go about building my shaving lather will surely carry the fewest consequences. But when I’m fiddling with my brush and soap, I have to admit the process can become all consuming. For a few minutes, I’m living wholly in the here and now and no where else. What a relief to be alive in the present. There’s nothing virtual about a shave, nothing digital or electronic. For once I don’t have a mouse in my hand, and my only operating system is a sink and towel. This may all sound trivial, but in the course of a day, there aren’t many moments when we’re not sorting out problems, or planning for the future, or just daydreaming about being somewhere else. My wife, the yogini, says there’s a word for these moments of focus and clarity: mindfulness. I crave them like some folks crave chocolate or potato chips or to be understood. It just feels right to drop anchor and set my whole attention on what I’m doing. It puts me back on an even keel, and for that reason, taking time for a good shave just may be one of the best decisions I’ll make all day.

I’ve had a love/hate relationship with T+S “scents.”  Performance is ultra premium as are the materials used.  This Artisan cares about his work

Cairo cancelled out the one that smelled like old fishing bait and dirt……..AND the one that smelled like my high school gym locker sweaty clothes left in it during spring break with a spritz of Chanel #5

I’m going to be using four T+S in my upcoming shaves, I’ll do a 5 kit wrap up at the end of my roadshow…

This one kicked us off in Egypt…

That caught my eye. First with Tallow & Steel Cairo which comes at you with wall of scent. Then the Pyramids and my mind took me to the Grateful Dead who played there and who were famous for their wall of sound array of loudspeakers. I grew up in the Bay Area listening to them and attending their concerts until I was overtaken by that dreadful wall of adult responsibility.

Mindfulness was possibly the biggest draw that led me into traditional shaving.  Increasing proficiently initially helped me shave more mindfully, and ironic though it may seem, I felt greatest calm and focus when the razor was against my skin.  Also ironically, in my case at least, continued proficiency improvement made it easy for my mind to wander.  Instead of paying attention to the blade, I now need to pay attention to my breathing while shaving.  

Cultivating mindfulness is a rewarding and never ending process.  I myself have a long way to go.
