We buried a good friend today.  Delbert (Bert) Lloyd grew up over the mountain from me in Oakley, Idaho.  (All the smart kids were on the east side of Independence Mountain in Elba.)  When Bert started his family he and his wife lived just down the road from me.  He loved growing things and turned a horticulture degree into a career as the City of Idaho Falls horticulturist and forester.  Bert caught Covid, went to the hospital, struggled on a ventilator and died.  So long my little cowboy buddy.  In 54 years you made tracks for sure.  I’ll look down the mountain at the Basin Cemetery and remember fondly many hunting and fishing trips, horseback rides and camping trips, and when I work with the flowers and trees in my yard I’ll think of you fondly.  
Today I chose Chiseled Face Summer Storm because it smelled of outdoors and slapped on some Chaps cologne before donning my suit to bid you adeau.  So long pard.  54 years was not enough.

I’ve got a new book. This time it’s The Three Musketeers. I read it first when I was thirteen or fourteen, and I loved it so much I had to limit myself to thirty pages each night before bed. You know how sometimes a scent can trigger all sorts of memories and feelings and moods and even bring back conversations that happened decades ago? Well, an old book does the same thing for me. Reading this swashbuckler is sort of bittersweet. To be honest, I wasn't ready for how it makes me homesick for places and times that are long gone. I’ll pair it up with Le Grand Chypre, because … well I suppose because it’s got a French title, and it smells as rich and intriguing as the book, and it’s just about the best lather maker on my shelf.
