True confession. When I heard that Barrister & Mann were doing away with lanolin in their soaps, I panicked. To me, that combination of tallow, Shea butter, and lanolin is the foundation of a truly happy shave. So, in the last month I’ve ordered as many of Will’s lanolin-rich soaps as I could find. (You're going to see a lot of new faces soon.) It’s not that lanolin-free soaps are bad. Far from it. I’ve had many wonderful shaves with scads of soaps that haven’t a speck of wool fat in their lather. Still, I have noticed that those soaps that do feature lanolin leave my hide especially smooth and easy. Was my panic justified? Of course not. It turns out that the new Omnibus base finishes just as rich as the previous lanolin soaps. Nevertheless, Barrister & Mann’s older bases – Glissant in particular – are still utterly remarkable, as witnessed by today’s faultless shave with this aging tub of Bay Rum.
