Every couple of years the bay rum madness hits me like a tropical fever. My sensibilities are altered. Something piratical comes over me, and I prowl the web sites looking for plunder. My wallet bleeds. My wife shakes her head and suggests an addiction recovery program. And I blame Marko. (When it comes to bay rum, no one holds the torch higher.)

Sir Henry’s certainly isn’t helping the situation. Their Island Estate tempted me and I succumbed. I'm glad I did. It's a fine and soothing rendition on the theme of pimenta racemosa. The bay is plentiful and genuine. Along with that typical pepper/alspice note there’s a hint of something green. The citrus is nice but not overbearing. I get something like key lime and bergamot, but without any sharp edges. It’s all very smooth and made sweeter by a dash of vanilla. But to me what’s most interesting is this: there’s this smell of smoke and sweet earth. It brings back memories of cane juice simmering over a smoldering fire. I suspect its some well-cured patchouli. It has a soft resinous note, too. That’s a nice touch. What’s not here is clove, or nutmeg, or hot cinnamon, so don’t worry about a spice burn.

yep. Time to put away the Swix blue and red wax and slather on some yellow.  Always loved the spring sling sunburn!  I don’t get to carve anymore but I still tune skis for kids and grands.  Envy you my friend!

Hardly anything as enchanting as tuning skis, the sounds of filing and deburring, the different smells of pre wax and finish waxes for changing conditions. It a religious experience.

Haha, agreed. The wax smell is a certain breed of incense.
