Brutalt Bra v. (Bergums Såpkokeri) ★★★★ mild lavender

This lather turns out lighter than new fallen snow on a cold, cold winter's morning. That's because there's really not much to this soap. Apart from water and the fragrance oil, Brutalt Bra consists of only two ingredients, potassium stearate and potassium cocoate. You wouldn't think that it could offer much cushion, but this morning it gave me a marvelous shave. Chased with a splash of Thayer's witch hazel, Brutalt Bra's finish rivals just about anything on my shelf. The scent is a faint but pleasant herbal note that falls somewhere between lavender and rosemary. A few years ago it wasn't difficult to find a tub of this soap, but it's all but disappeared from the markets now. That's odd, since it must cost next to nothing to make.

I like lavender and I like Mickey Lee Soapworks so I was especially happy this morning. MLSW describes it as a blend of several different lavender oils having a strong floral presence with herbal and balsamic notes. I get the lavender floral and herbal but not much balsam. What do I care. For a lavender junkie this one hits all the right spots. Scent is about 7/10 and stays through the shave. Almost no trace after final rinse. The Mickey Lee lather is top shelf. Slickness is on point. I use this one throughout the year.

French Vetiver v. (Cyril R. Salter) ★★★★ reeking vetiver

Burnt roots, rust, coffee grounds, ashes, coal stoves, boiled spinach, dirt, grass clippings ... it's all in here, and it's all good. This is the most unapologetic vetiver of them all, just straight up unrefined essential oil squeezed from the earthy roots of this tropical grass. It's called French Vetiver because the French island of Réunion was one of the first to supply vetiver oil to the cosmetic industry. Nowadays, vetiver is grown in many tropical locations. The oil in this cream could just as easily come from Indonesia. In fact, I've got some thick and gooey Javan vetiver oil that matches this soap note for note. Does the cream give a good shave? I've had better - though it's slick, I'm usually left with a nick and a light burn. But nothing rivals the genuine aroma of its fragrance.
