Limenthol (Cold River) ★★★★★ lime, cedar, rosemary

The lime in this soap is a natural fresh fruit smell, not the Otter Pop candied lime scent that can make a good soap seem cheap. The cedar is just as fresh. No hamster cages here. The menthol is perfect, cool enough to put a chill on your cheeks without giving you the shivers. I wouldn’t have thought rosemary would work in the company of citrus and cedar, but it gives the fragrance a soft roundness. Otherwise, this soap would grate like Cold River’s Bergamot & Bay, all angles and edges. Instead, Limenthol strikes me as calm and dignified. It goes well with a clean scent, like Penhaligon’s Blenheim Bouquet.

It was a slow Sunday morning, and I wasn’t paying much attention to my shave. First I overloaded the brush and then I overwatered the lather. Turns out there’s a limit to how much juice Cold River soaps can take. After running my brush three or four times under the tap, the lather in my soup bowl got so sloppy that I should have used a ladle instead of a brush. The emulsion, however, didn’t break down. It stayed creamy and slick and saved my skin from nicks and abrasion. The scent lasted three or four hours. The clean smooth feel lasted all day.
