Cologne-Fougère (Le Père Lucien) ★★★★ lavender, rosemary/mint, hay, bergamot, green tobacco

(Day 5) — After five days with this soap, I’ve got a happy nose, but some sore hide. Like so many other non-tallow soaps, Cologne-Fougère smells fantastic, but falls short on protecting my skin from the blade’s edge day after day. I don't want to suggest, however, that it wasn't pleasant to use. The soap was always easy to lather, and once I learned to pump enough water into the emulsion, it became quite stable and slick. Its finish is one of my favorites, plump without feeling oily. But it leaves a little to be desired when it comes to its principal purpose, protecting the skin. Now my cheeks are scratched, and they’re ready to flop in a lather with a deeper cushion.

For the past week, I’ve left the soap uncovered, as Cyril recommends. It’s firmer now, and loads more easily, but the greatest advantage of keeping it unveiled is the constant presence of the scent. It’s a very nice fougère. I will be lathering it regularly between spells with soaps that offer a better shield.
