Well, Duhhh! (on me) Head shaving

After a few years lay off with head shaving I'm back into it as an experiment.

Whoda thunk that the cranium needs to be mapped same as the face!!?? But I'm here skullturbating and realize that my shave direction needs to be towards the top rear of my cranium for the final ATG pass.

BTW, shaving the skull today and using the ER' 24 I raised heck on the scars (blood). I need to learn where they are also; part of skull mapping .

Does anyone else use head mapping ? If so, what do you find?

I'v never really "head mapped" to the extent that you guys do with your face. I pretty much go WTG/XTG/ATG on the top of the head, being back-to-front/l-to-r/front-to-back. On the sides and back of the head I go XTG/GTX/ATG.

After that, I have a couple of "tough spots" that need some buffing and j-hooking to get BBS, but in general, it's been pretty straight forward for me...

Guys, I have a full head of hair and, obviously, do not head shave.  However, I have to say that, ShadowsDad and BadDad, your honesty and thoughtful tips are only going to be helpful to others.  Even more, it helps someone like me appreciate what head shavers have to consider.  For some ridiculous reason, I always thought it was shaving from back to front.  Thank you two for widening my point of view.

Scars and moles. They deserve special mention. When you fist start...you will cut them, you will slice them. Eventually, it will slow down as you whittle away at them. Be careful and go slow if you know you have one or the other in a certain spot. Moles bleed A LOT, so be careful around them...

Yeah, Special mention... that's one way to describe it :-) . I sorta figured I might have problems with my choice of razor. I was using the ER '24 and it can be a bit aggressive. I think maybe I'll just dedicate a Clog Pruf to the job.

Once you get used to it, you can use any razor you're comfortable with. I use a 33c, Super Speed, Maggard V3, 37c, Old Type, and last night I used a GEM G Bar. By the end of next week, I'm hoping to take my first adjustable for a spin thanks to andrewjs18 providing a fantastic deal on a Slim...

I don't know if it's real or not, but it feels like my mole and scars have been "leveled off", for lack of a better term. I have cut them several times, but it seems that lately either I have shaved them down enough that they are smooth and no longer catch the blade, or my technique has improved enough to prevent the blade from catching.

Either way is fine by me, as long as the bleeding stops!

I've shaved mine a few times but have not in a while. I never bothered to map my skull. I do have a couple scars I was cautious with but no cuts in the end. I used an R89 for the job since it's not aggressive and just slid my hand around and touched up a couple spots.

Brian, I have never mapped my head when I shave it, but that may be a good idea. Also, you may want to try a milder razor, next time.

I never really mapped mine, but I do 4 passes mostly WTG, except over the ears I will go ATG. I do 2 passes with a DE, usually a Krona, and 2 passes with a SE Hydromagic Schick. I have a cowlick/swirl at the top back of my head. I usually start on the back of my head and pull forward over the top of it, and doing the back, I start high and pull down. So it gets extra attention. Going ATG over everything seems overkill considering I shave it every other day (during the summer). I alternate having face night and head night through out the summer.

I did have 2 moles up there. I shaved my head and went to my military doc and asked him to freeze them off. He was excited to do it. He never burned off moles on someones head for the sole purpose of making a clean pass while shaving. Being a big guy I have scars on my melon. Mostly from the hood latch of my 64 Ford. They are groove scars without lumps so give me no issues.

Also, I never had such a thumpin headache as I did when the feeling started to come back on the first through third day after getting those mole removed. But I am glad I did it. I know the 1912 SE is your weapon of choice. I never did my head with my 1912 so I cant offer advice there.
