Hi. I always wash with L'Oreal Charcoal Magnetic before a shave as I find this really cleans & conditions my face.
Although a few weeks ago I did read in a health mag that had a feature on a good shave. It said when you wash your face the rubbing on your skin swells by 1-2% & you should pat dry your face after then wait 1_2 min to let your face settle back down. Then slash warm water on your face & start lathering. I haven't tried it yet, personally I think it depends on your face.

Andrew, I just splash a bit of warm water on my face and start face-lathering. From my experience, once your technique is sound using a good razor, blade and soap, there isn't much else that will, significantly, enhance a shave.

the only thing I can think of is too much exfoliation before the shave causes your skin trouble.

If I shower before I shave I use a little of the lather from my shampoo on my beard to soften it and remove the oils and gunk, I then use a little Dreadnought Oil or Proraso pre-shave and then lather up. If I don't shower, I'll use something like PAA Prickly Pear or, now that I have tried it, Musgo, to wash my face with before I lather up

I mean washing my face in general whether I shave or not. If my face actually gets dirty from doing yard work or working on my car or something then obviously I will wash it.

I will say that I never shave after a shower, always before. For some reason, no matter what I do, I get rough shaves right after a shower.
same for me
