I tend to agree - I appreciate the engineering behind their products.

I continue to struggle with this one spot on my jaw line. Almost as if I need a very efficient razor for one small part of my face.  I used J strokes and gentle buffing with the Nodachi.   Just always a risk when you go over one spot too many times.

Another shave this morning with the Nodachi Ti. This time with the OC plate. Second use on RK Chromium.

Same prep as always with shower / wash cloth scrub and the PAA cube before lathering. Using up the last of my A&E Spartacus.

I took it slow with the OC plate and the shave was fairly easy. Little bit of drag around my chin as I deliberated the best approach angle.

2 pass shave with clean ups. I did a bit of light buffing and J strokes along my trouble spot and was rewarded with a BBS.

Post with alum produced the normal amount of feedback - no nicks or weepers. Overall a great shave for my time time with the OC plate. Post with awesome sauce splash and a bit of HC&C unscented balm.

Calm_Shaver you might have seen this already, but Tatara has a 15% off sale right now (see my post above). Not quite as good as the Black Friday deal, but a solid discount in case you don't want to wait until next year for the OC plate.

I’d love to have a Masamune handle in the dark finish, but even with the discount that’s a bit too much for just a handle. I’ll make do with the Nodachi handle.

Final shave with Nodachi Ti was great. Used the OC plate again with same RK Chromium blade. Cube, Spartacus, Sawdust Creations brush with G7 synthetic, Alum and awesome sauce aftershave.

The OC plate required a little more patience and a lighter touch but this razor took down 24 hours of growth and easily handled my problem spot. The razor weight is perfect for me and the head size makes it very simple to get under my nose and below my bottom lip. It’s efficient without the bite and simply a great razor.

Would I buy this razor? Absolutely…. If I had the funds, I would add this to my den. The realistic comparison for me is my Timeless Ti 95. This razor give a smoother shave but is less efficient and the head is a bit bulkier. I enjoy both razors equally and honestly cannot afford to own both right now (these are premium razors).

Thank you very much to Dan and Tatara for the opportunity to try out this razor. It is really a pleasure to be part of this community.

Razor will be on its way to the next user today or tomorrow.

Happy holidays to all!

Razor arrived Friday just as I was ready to shave and so I got to try it with a brand new Astra SP and the SB plate.

Was impressed with the performance and the ease with which it handled. A definite winner in my book. Such an easy shaver yet efficient. Reminds me of the overlandrr without the drag and the H&S No75 ...two other razors that can work on autopilot.

This is one of those...well done... Looking forward to using the open comb.

Got a second shave in with the open comb plate this time. Was going just as smooth and felt very similar to the closed comb until the 3rd against the grain pass. This is more aggressive against the grain. Not as easy for me as the SB plate.
Am not much of an open comb users but this did impress me.
I wish the razor was shinier and looked more premium. It's a damn fine shaver but falls shor in my opinion on the looks department.

Will give the SB plate a go in 25 hrs to see how it does as a daily driver.
Also seems like one can keep tightening the handle once you put a blade in...it does not stop tightening on it's own when u think it should leaving me a bit confused.

Used the Astra blade on second use.

A couple of thoughts:

1, Regarding handle tightening. Tatara has designed the interface between the handle, base plate and top cap different from any other razor known by me and in accordance with sound mechanical engineering principles.

From a layman's perspective. Properly, any interface should be done in double shear separating the fastener from the pieces being held together effectively separating clamping from torquing forces. This technically is impractical in this application so Tatara has the handle completely embedded within the baseplate to provide extra strength to the otherwise weak interface. For example many top cap threaded fasteners break at this junction because it creates a stress riser that fails when impacted, say from dropping. The Tatara interface will take a much higher impact without failing as the interface is reinforced with another layer of metal and the stress rising threads not exposed.

2, Regarding the finish. Tatara is a highly and consistently branded product. Their brand is centered on samurai lore from swordsmiths to great swords. Note their logo.

The greatest of all Japanese swordsmiths was Masamune. To this day a prize is awarded for the most advanced and perfect of swords produced on an annual basis. So prestigious is the award, that if no sword meets the highest standard, the award is retained until the year when it deserved - a major point of divergence between Western standards of adequacy and Eastern standards of excellence.

Masamune's swords had a unique nie finish that was flat and sparkled next to light.  Tatara has captured that nie finish as a signature branding element. It, in fact, is expensive to create so not as though it semifinished.

Should you prefer to remove this unique design element making a Tatara a Tatara, Alan can and has polished these to a high lustre...but why?

Hope this helps address your concerns.

Thanks Dan for the insight...
I am a collector of Japanese Knives and do much appreciate the fine cjapanrsr craftsmanship...and tataran although not Japanese...does show extreme craftsmanship in it's implementation of the this razor.

I guess I just would prefer shiny polished as a standard offering also.
