Tallow vs. Vegan-Do you care (anymore)?

Doesn’t matter to me. It’s a timely question. I used to have mostly tallow soaps but have over the past few years gravitated towards non-tallow soaps. I think that the only ones that I use routinely are Valobra tallow (vintage AoS and Czech and Speake), and Stirling.

For years tallow soaps were the best and mostly all I had but now the best soap in my den is a vegan soap.

Do you know how hard it is to answer a 4 part question with a yes/no answer? Especially if the answer is nuanced by one of 3 factors given by you?

Tallow or vegan doesn't really matter to me.....based on the soaper I am buying from. Some soapers are good at one, or the other, and the masters have perfected their craft in both.

So....I buy (either based soap) based on experience from specific makers, not on recommendations, and curiosity on (possibly new) scent preferences from makers I know have perfected their craft in that base, be it tallow or vegan.

And my personal view is I look upon glycerin soaps as vegan....and as melt and pour soaps, that takes little to no skill in crafting. So I have avoided them as the market provides soaps that perform so much better....like for example Williams

I was trying to create a hierarchy. It seems like a few years ago the tallow or no tallow was at the top. Then those other factors came in as secondary factors. Now, it appears that for most answering the thread, it’s flip flopped.

I could care less what the formula is as long as it performs well and smells good. There are plenty of good soaps in both categories.

No, don’t care.

A while back I would have said tallow. But grooming dept nai has made me a believer. Any soap with a lot of coconut oil really dries out my skin tho and leaves me “itchy” dry in a sense.

I still prefer tallow over vegan. Vegan-based soaps still don't hold a candle to top-tier tallow formulas from Declaration Grooming, Wholly Kaw, and Zingari Man. The latest vegan from Grooming Dept, Aion, is the one exception according to Ruds.

Now, with that said, there are a small handful of vegan-based soaps that perform exceptionally well that I really do enjoy using. I absolutely love the vegan soaps from Southern Witchcrafts. Their base is outstanding and such a pleasure to use. They are my favorite vegan-based artisan due to their wonderful and unique scents and base. I'm also a fan of PAA CK-6. Like PAA or not, they've got a massive selection of great software.

With so many top-tier tallow formulas, it would take a lot for me to try any new artisan with a vegan-only formula but that's just me.
