Though I've used your soap exclusively up to this summer, when I picked up a couple of other artisans on a visit home in the US.
I've only just tried your AS, I also picked up a bottle of West Indies AS. This was before the recent releases, still waiting on Kyoto to arrive in Finland. (Thanks for delaying sending it for me, I appreciate it!)

Your AS has absolutely spectacular skin feel, best of any I've tried tbh.

I went with West Indies because it's the one scent in my T+S collection that I like as a scent and not a 'vibe'. For me an AS is about the scent, the soap the vibe.

Since your listening to our dumb ideas right now, I'd love it if you offered some one off AS's that are just about the scent but with the same great skin care properties. Idk, maybe the two new regulars are just that. Will have to wait till I'm able to get some to see.

Hi HMan , I like your suggestion. Your distinguishing between "scent" and "vibe" has made me think though, I'm asking myself what the difference is or more particularly, how I would articulate the difference and I'm having trouble - how would you describe the difference?

Your suggestion that Ryan make stand alone aftershaves is interesting too - I've been thinking recently about asking the membership whether they feel strongly or not about matching soap and aftershave. Personally I'm not fussed about matching a soap and an aftershave (by matching I mean the same scent). I do have plenty of soap/aftershave sets (all the T+S ones) but I also have plenty of soaps where there either isn't a matching aftershave (not uncommon) or I just didn't buy the matching aftershave. There are plenty of aftershaves on the market that don't have matching soaps as well. In some part I like the freedom of choosing which soap and aftershave combinations to use on a given day but there are also some soaps that, while I may enjoy the scent during the shave, I don't want to carry that scent around with me all day (or for a few hours) as an aftershave.

What are your thoughts on that?

Ryan @ Tallow + Steel what do you think?

Thanks
Mark

Marko I made a post here a while back about how T+S soaps smell like places I've been. I just used vibe as shorthand for that post.
'Scents' I think of as more constructed, more classic, perfume like if you will. Of course that leaves a huge range. But for example I would call Chatillon Lux AS or AP Reserve, perfume like scents Myrsol or Floid or Aqua Velva classic scents. At least for me T+S scents are in a different ballpark.

I've noticed that people's comments on T+S tend to use the word polarizing. Personally I don't see them that way at all, I've liked them all, but if you expect them to be regular scents then I can see being put off. But the thing is most of them do work great under 'scents' which is also why I kind of like calling them a vibe. They don't clash they give an underlying extra feeling, a sense of place, to 'scents'.

Don't know if that helps.

As for matching, I've never matched AS and soap before this summer. And even now that I have a few matching sets, I find I just like to mix and match for the most part.

Thanks HMan that does help - I'll also check out your earlier post.

I think what people refer to as polarizing in relation to T+S is that Ryan marches to the beat of his own drum when it comes to the scent of his products. His stuff is all unique and one of a kind and that doesn't necessarily appeal to everyone which is fair enough. I think you could probably say the same thing about Chatillon Lux. There is nothing "off the shelf" about either of these guys.

“Vibe”... I like that! I think that word fits pretty nicely in what we are going for with scents.

As for the one-off aftershaves - I don’t know. I guess my question would be that if you are taking the time to develop a scent, why would you not put it in a soap too? From what I see, I think matching soap + aftershave is a trend that is continuing to become more popular. When I started wetshaving in 2008, you’d rarely ever have a matching aftershave, but now it’s the norm.

What do you guys think - would you want standalone T+S aftershaves?

Yeah of course a matched set would be optimal, but I recall you saying that more classic or perfumy scents weren't your thing, so that got me thinking. I get it for soaps, but AS is kind of different, for me at least, so thought this could be a sort of compromise. Just spitballing.

I think having both is the way to go, it gives people options. I for one shave 7 days a week but can only use scented aftershave 2 days a week, most days I wear the same aftershave that disappears after an hour or unscented. I also think there are scents that can take you on a 10-15 minute journey but you don’t want that to last all day, just my 2 (s)cents, but my usage is different than others.

I like it as a set, I personally don't like buying shave soap without the matching aftershave, so I couldn't see myself buying a stand-alone aftershave. Also, wouldn't the soap be the better seller? so why limit the sales?
