Razor: ATT G1
Brush: Trotter Handcrafts - Figured Maple w/ 28mm Elite Manchurian knot
Soap: Ethos DFS Colab
Aftershave: 4711
Blade: ... not really sure, I just found it at Rite Aid

Happy Easter!

I was super excited to try my first GEM razor. The quality of this ATT is top-notch, but it’s a weird design and I sure hope I don’t drop the little screw piece down the sink someday.

The blade situation is also bizarre and somehow it was kinda an ordeal to find blades, or at least quality blades. I have a nice DFS member sending me a couple Personna’s... but on the way home this afternoon, I swung into Rite Aid and found a 10-pack of some generic GEM blades that I’ve never heard of.

The shave was “different” to put it best. I could tell this blade is really ridged and there is no flex. Maybe a good thing? The razor gave me a close, comfortable shave, but I need more time with it to know if this is a format that I like.

Anyways, those are my quick thoughts.

Happy Easter... the most important holiday of all.

The ones at Rite Aid may be carbon steel and need to be cleaned and dried after shaving or they could rust on the edge. If they are SS and coated you are good to go. Hope it works out for you Paul. The Single edge razors are a different feel for sure. If it isn't your cup of tea, let me know..................and close the drain when loading so you don't lose the little thingy Happy2

Oh ya, I definitely cleaned and dried the blade. I’ll do some research and try to figure out what the heck I bought. It was a 10-pack for $5 and the package said “Daylogic”... although I imagine some other company made them.

That's a beautiful photo Paul - nice kit, nice shot - and Dave has hit the highlights for the blades.  IMO the "bible" for the blades you want is Accutec, which owns the GEM brandname.  See this Accutec page, which details the blade specs, including the part number, 62-0178.  Look for this part number.  One CONUS source is the Razor blade Company here.  Ignore the "62-0165" at the link.  I think it is an internal identifier.  Instead, note that the SKU is 62-0178 and the specs match Accutec's in every detail.  I have ordered from them, and they delivered the same package of 100 blades shown by Accutec.  Connaught's is another source.  Before Brexit and increased shipping costs, Connaught's VAT free prices could not be beat, especially for bulk purchases.  I mention Connaught just in case you happen to be shopping there.

Thanks Mike & Dave.

So, here’s some pics of what I grabbed at Rite Aid this afternoon... it does look like they were made by Accu TEC. Well, at least that’s what the plastic blade holder/bank says. So, maybe I got lucky?

Do I need to do anything other than dry them after using?

Thanks again and I’m off to go search for my tetanus records Wink

Hmmmm, I have the same Accutec package for a few but they are stamped differently than yours. (Stainless and Gem) Have an unopened 100 pack of what Mike stated to use next.

Ok, I found this info pretty helpful. I believe the second paragraph describes what I purchased:

NOTE: I was just about to post this when I saw Paul's post and reference to what appears to be an excellent article.  I still think there is some value to it, so I am posting it anyway. ...

Let me once again echo what Dave said.  I have the same package.

I think you have rebranded Accutec blades, the same sort of thing as when Listerine relabels its mouthwash with, for example, a Target or Walmart label.  However, there are many different types of Accutec blades that fit a GEM razor.  They come with or without coating, in carbon or stainless, 3 faceted or two faceted, degreased or not degreased, and so on.  Accutec lists the intended applications for each model, and they cover a wide range from automotive, flooring, scraping, various medical, through clean room use.  I have what may be the same package that Dave just showed.  Mine came in this packaging:

I don't use the ones in this package for shaving because, while they are stainless, they do not advertise "coated".  Your packaging does not say "coated" or "stainless".  This may have been an oversight in designing the daylogic label - the blades may actually be coated and stainless - but who knows.

It is simple enough and costs only a pittance to drop a few of the 62-0178 blades in an envelope and send them your way.  That way you can compare.

Thanks Mike, you beat me to it. I'm at work and I was thinking I would get some off to Paul too but you will probably get to it before I can. I was actually going to respond I could send some to him for free when he first asked in the BST to purchase, but was hoping somebody closer to him on the West Coast would chime in and get them to him quicker.

Thanks guys. A forum member has already sent a couple Personna Stainless my way. I sincerely appreciate the offer though!

It will be fun to compare to my Rite Aid specials (which I don't think are stainless or coated!)
