Single Edge SEptember!

Besides razor used SE September should be used to raise awareness of some neglected and relatively unknown SE razors.

First up is a newcomer to the razor market. The MARS razor.

They offer up to 10 different plates for half DE or injector blades.

The MARS razors look interesting BBS.  Ten plate options each are shown for half DE and injector format plates.  Do the plates represent increasing (or decreasing) efficiency, and can you correlate any of the injector plates as similar to Schick model letters (e.g., Type G, I, L, etc.)?  Also, you you know what country these razors ship from?

I don't know which direction connotates what for the razor plates. From what I understand they are made in Great Britain. I was only recently turned onto this razor and haven't gotten one myself yet. They also have a facebook group if you are on there and want to ask them questions directly. Because it is 3D printed I think it is not taken seriously as a commercial razor but seen as something that a shave aficionado is making in their garage. The thing is it isn't from what I've read and an all metal version is in works.

Pre-SEptember test run...

Well, here we go, kicking it off (sort of). As my Overlander is currently out for work, I am starting up SEptember early.

I currently have one SE razor, a Schick type I 'Hydromagic' injector. I used it for half of my face when I was testing the Sabre out (thanks Eric!). It worked quite well, for that 1/2 shave and I was cautiously optimistic of its future. (Old picture, just to refresh everyone on which 'version' it is)

Today I used Dr Jon's Savannah Sunrise. Normal water rinse prior to shaving. Fwiw, I used a 26mm G5C brush.

If I'm being honest, I didn't load well and had only an 'ok' lather. Nonetheless, it worked. As usual, pass 1 was a bit more sensitive. I just never wait long enough to start. Usually, pass 2+ are smooth and comfortable. Unfortunately this time, pass 2 and 3 were not much smoother. I seem to have the same issue with injector razors where shave 1 is smooth and from there it's a stinging, somewhat uncomfortable experience.

Regardless, I still got a good, close shave. I just hope the discomfort doesn't remain for the next few shaves. Otherwise, SEptember will quickly turn into a failed experiment for me.

I’m in. Mine is going to be Sabre September. I picked one up a few months ago—fell in love with it, and was convinced that it was the best razor ever, single or double edged. I spent enough time with it to get really comfortable, then started experimenting (again) with a variety of other razors. Results? I don’t like any razor at the moment and am not happy with any of the shaves. So, back to the Sabre, exclusively, for a month—to fall in love all over again.

Your concerns are understandable Paul, and I hope the discomfort does not compel you to give up.  Not many people know this, but Shakespeare originally wrote "The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our razors, but in our soap." ( )   You might consider picking a soap that works well for you and that you are familiar with, and sticking with it for a while - maybe even locking down a single brush that meets the same criteria.  One other thing - I'm not sure if it will help or not - but when in doubt with an injector format razor, I try a shallower angle (more nearly riding the cap)  --  Good luck!
