We all have our pet peeves. Things that should be innocuous, but annoy us, or even drive us absolutely nuts.

I thought it would be fun for us to list some of our shaving-related annoyances here.

Here are a few of mine:

BBS

This term has always annoyed me. I know that it conveys a set of ideas to people. Perhaps most of the more experienced of us interpret it as 'a very close shave that was enjoyable and very comfortable as well'. However, the term BBS - baby's butt smooth - just focuses on the closeness of the shave.....which is only one aspect of a good shave.

One of the best shaving-related statements I've heard is something I read on another forum (no idea about the attribution, but it's not mine):

"BBS should be the reward for a good shave, not the aim."

I've always preferred the term CCS (close, comfortable shave), as that's a much more reasonable target to aim for when you start shaving.

Even using BBS to describe the outcome of a shave has it's problems, as newbies see this and then may be inclined to focus on BBS in their own shaves instead of comfort. I always think that if I wanted a BBS shave every time, I'd just have stuck with my multi-blade razor and the 2-pass ATG shaves I used to do. They were always super-close. They were also always harsh. I had many ingrown hairs, lots of skin irritation, etc. There's a reason I moved to traditional wetshaving.

Croap

I don't see this much anymore, but I used to. I initially always read it as 'crap'.....a sort of mental autocorrect, I guess. Smile

Soft-soap means something to me. It's not that much longer, and is less jargon that people have to wade through.

Anyone else have any of these terms or anything about our wetshaving hobby that annoys them?

Remember, we're not trying to attack anyone here. It's just a bit of fun.

Nothing else annoys me more than the word 'Software' in shaving. Reason: I write software for a living and it is nothing like soap making. I could go hours talking about why it is 'wrong' to call consumables in shaving software. But well, that's just my opinion, man.

If you call soap software, you are cartridge to me.

Good thread! The one I hate the most (and it really has nothing to do with shaving) is SWMBO. It just annoys the crap out of me. I'm glad that nobody here ever uses it, that I've seen anyway. There is another site out there that I've read on occasion where it is quite prevalent.

SWMBO got it's popularity from the 'Rumpole' series. Mortimer picked that term up from the book 'She' by H. RIder Haggard, where the eponymous character was referred to as 'She who must be obeyed'. Rumpole uses is to refer to his wife in a slightly derogatory way.

I thought it was cute for a while, but it's overused a lot.

I hate it when people try to act like 19th century English gentlemen. Like when they use the words "gentlemanly" or "indeed" or any other term you wouldn't use during normal conversation. It comes off as pretentious.

It wasn't very gentlemanly of you to buy so many EJ razors without telling your wife. Indeed I hope you don't give a sheet and continue to buy what you want. Tongue

"Bloom"
Seems silly and efeminte.

"Post shave"
You mean aftershave?

"Best"
Maybe you like it a lot.

"Top tier"
Well that's your opinion... Price doesn't necessarily mean quality.

Not much really actually bugs me.

The words people choose to express themselves don't matter so much as what they are saying. As long as I can get the gist of what they're trying to convey I'm cool with how they say it most of the time.

I don't really have any terms that bother me. My biggest pet peeve is when someone tries to make things "right or wrong". Sure, there are a lot of proven techniques and a lot of things that have proven themselves to be useless, but generally speaking, everything we do is adapted to our own personal styles, tastes, and goals, from the way we load and generate lather to the way we store our used blades. Everything we do is a matter of choice and opinion...in my opinion Wink

Righty ol' chap. A small, yet trivial trangression. You see, the lady of the house hath yet discover my mistresses. Why so many razors you may ask yourself? A true gentleman is always prepared to maintain his immaculate appearance. He should keep at least one soap, one brush, one razor, and one scent at each of his mistress's homes. That, my good fellow, is why I purchased so many razors. Because of my other hobby...collecting mistresses!

Another equally expensive hobby...
