Hey Sarge, spacers (a washer, gasket, or even coins) are placed in the handle socket in order to set the knot higher. Setting the knot higher gives more loft. Since April, many of the fine guys here have been enabling me in accumulating handles and knots!

To be more serious, they have been extremely helpful, answering questions and making recommendations on supplies. Paul Stubble Daddy makes some beautiful handles, and my collection of brushes has gone from 4 to infinity and beyond!

Spacers can have a meaning that only the user might know about, even though it might be silly. Some time ago, a friend of mine knotted a vintage handle for me and when we were discussing loft, he said he would add a penny to get the desired height.  I mentioned that it would be neat if it could be my birth year date on the penny.  However, since I was born in 1945 that was highly unlikely.  He did find one, though, so that brush now seems just a bit more personal.

I thought you used beer bottle gaskets! My stock is running low, so I will take your advice on these!

I'd also see a recent post I believe by Stubble Daddy where he was showing how to set the knot with a plastic sleeve and tape. I didn't know if it had something to do with the space between the knot and the inside (not the bottom) of the hole of the handle. Sorry for my likely poor description. I guess in the end you select the width of the knot so that it snugly fits into the handle and wouldn't want any space in there.

I did use beer bottle gaskets for a while. I like these nylon washers more as they just seem to lay perfectly flat and stack better.

The spacer(s) allow you to adjust your desired knot height. This will give you more loft/splay.

I drill my handles ~17mm deep (excellent for badgers), but some folks (especially synthetic Knot users) like the depth to be a bit less… therefore spacers are used to raise the knot up.
