Medical update
A few ups and downs. The new team's nurse practitioner failed to make contact with my wife yesterday, so that was disappointing.
But the surgeon who called us so late and really impressed us so much, has let us know we need to be in Boston Monday noon for a repeat of the scoping that was performed twice up here. So THE specialist in biliary/gall bladder/liver tumors at Beth Israel is going to perform the scoping himself, and while this is another procedure, this ought to be the best person to do it. And then the team will analyze. So that is fantastic for her. The down side is she misses her IVIG infusion. But small price to pay, we figure, for getting a better lead on this cancer thing.
And then we go back Friday to meet the team and get a plan in place.
This will affect my work/pay adversely. I do have FMLA, intermittent, in place for just this reason, but I am running out of paid time off, so dipping into savings. And folks at work, while expressing sympathy and stating "we're here for you, what ever you need" did NOT live up to those words when I asked about needing time last week to wrap my head around things. Back pedaling furiously, after telling me all about how I needed to take care of myself (I had managed to annoy the management team by not following an SOP for newly hired technicians and was accused of "making a lot of bad decisions lately. Are you sure you are ok?") Nothing like them adding more stress. As I am sure others have felt before me, you hit a certain age and suddenly wonder if they'd rather be rid of you given they can hire a new grad for less. This has me trying to be as diligent as possible to be seen as needed, so the whole fiasco with allowing a new hire (who is full time at the hospital and certified and an adult) but not company trained, had them messing themselves. If I can ignore this SOP, what others might I ignore? is their question. So I shot myself in the foot on that one, and had to do the mea culpa thing.
Alright. I'll shut up about it. I screwed up and I hate that. Maybe even, like them, I am trying to put more blame on others rather than fully take it on myself. I don't know. It just couldn't have come at a worse time, you know?
Thanks again for the support.

Hang in there and stay as focused as you can. Drop off here for a bit if you need time to focus on priorities too but keep shaving

Eric, it sounds like things are moving in the right direction with your wife and her health. I am always impressed at the medical resources that can be brought to bear when needed. And when pushed, we have to be our own advocates to make sure those resources come our way for sure. The work thing is just life with people, often referred to as "organizational behaviour" which translates into the s**t you have to deal with at work. Words like, "we're there for you" and "what can we do to make this right?" are often as empty as the souls of the people saying them. Having been through similar situations all I can say is work to rule, do what they require and don't give them any clubs to hit you with. Its all part of this crazy game but, as Dave said, don't forget to shave.

Marko, it's like you were in the closed door meeting with me! Thanks for the support and encouragement, brother! I try to push self-advocacy as much as possible with the folks I meet at the pharmacy, as so many rely on others to get what is needed. Being part of that system, I know how easy it is to just push on to the next task, as there never seems to be enough time for all the extras, so to say. So I encourage my folks to call us, bug us even, as it will make sure we take care of you as best we can! And that is what it has come to with my wife, we have to keep calling, asking, sending messages, etc, and try not to overwhelm them too much, but don't let them forget about us, either!

Ah, Simple Minds The formula for self-advocacy is pretty simple - be kind, be compassionate and be persistent. Anger and hostility never gets the job done and seriously, its like being a dick to your waiter before he's brought the food out (Would you like extra phlegm with that?) only its your health/life thats at stake not just a meal. You should never mistreat people whether they're servers or doctors/nurses or whatever, its bad karma and it says more about you than them.
