My nose prefers the AoS variety.

The best Sandalwood I’ve ever smelled hands down is Chatillon Lux’s ‘Santal Auster’ in collaboration with Declaration Grooming. Unfortunately it’s no longer produced because of cost. It will be a sad day for me when I use the last of my Soaps/Splashes.

+1 on Santal Auster. I feel very lucky that I managed to get a back up...

I'm fairly new to Sandalwood (only have Proraso red). Since we have a gathering of experts, I'm hoping I could pose a question...

I just ordered a tub of Mystic Waters Coconut Sandalwood, based on rave reviews stating it's tropical and a great Summer scent. I can imagine the coconut, but I am not certain how the sandalwood plays into this.

Has anyone smelled this soap? Is it really a tropical scent? Would it bring to mind beaches, as I also read? Hoping I didn't make a mistake.

Here's the sandalwood soaps/creams I've tried.

• Taylor of Old Bond Street - 'Sandalwood' soap, in bowl: It was my first ever shaving soap and I love it not just because of that but because it's woody and spicy and manly and to me, smells like shaving should smell like and it's got a fairly strong scent which fills the bathroom and lingers faintly on the skin for hours. That said, I don't know how much of the scent is actually sandalwood. Its description: "Top notes are lavender, rosemary, geranium and amber; middle notes are carnation, fern and orange blossom; base notes are sandalwood, patchouli, vetiver, powdery notes, musk, labdanum, cedar and guaiac wood."
  
• Truefitt & Hill - 'Sandalwood' shaving cream, sample pouch: Description: "Top notes are lemon, lime and bergamot; middle notes are sandalwood and cedar; base notes are tonka bean and musk." - it was quite nice, again not sure how much it really resembles sandalwood - I think I recall the lime and cedar standing out with quite a bit of spicyness.
  
• Art of Shaving - 'Sandalwood Essential Oil' shaving cream, sample: Pleasant but the strength from my sample is also very mild. Can't pick out anthing in particular.
  
• First Canadian Shave Soap Co. - 'South Simcoe Sandalwood', in tub: mild-to-medium scent, it's okay but nothing memorable. Great base though.
  
• 'Mysore Sandal Soap', 75g oval bar: bought this general 'toilet soap' as it was advertised as being pure sandalwood but it smells like a cheap bathroom cleaning product or a urinal cake and I now see that their website says "it contains the fragrance blended from natural Sandalwood oil and other essential oils like Clove leaf oil, Patchouli, Vetiver, Orange, etc.". Still looking for pure Indian sandalwood...
  
• Edwin Jagger - 'Sandalwood' cream: my sample had such a weak scent strength that unfortunately, I can't give any opinion of this
  

Sandalwood had never really grabbed my attention, until I got a sample of Santal Auster. That is some next level stuff — something I wish I had known when it was released.

Recently, I acquired a sandalwood fragrance oil from P&J Trading, hoping to use a drop or two with an unscented shaving soap every now and then. The fragrance oil is a sad joke. It's not a horrible scent, but it's also not sandalwood, even in the slightest…

I wouldn't call it tropical, but it's a nice mix with the sandalwood.
